It's my favorite too.

Earlier this year I went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where the original is on display. As I've said in the past, it's not theology but Mercer's brush strokes indicate that St Joseph is not asleep. It's a very moving thing in person - of course Jesus' foster father is vigilant, and watching over his family. It's a wonderful sign in these troubled times.

If you're traveling near Boston, go see this masterpiece. And sunkenciv can tell you about the ancient Egyptian section (I went there...it's awesome).

So many beautiful paintings. My preference are #9 by Crespi; #13 Rembrandt; #31 Gentileschi; #40 Varallo; #42 Patinir with a splendid landscape and #43 by Merson. Genial to place Mary and baby Jesus sleeping within the paws of the sphinx.

Another beautiful aspect of Merson's painting/genius is to convey utter stillness - with movement!

(The smoke from the little fire rising straight up!)

Fleeing persecution at the hands of Roman authorities, the Holy Family takes refuge in Egypt. Joseph dozes beside a dying campfire while his donkey grazes on sparse desert grass. At left the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus, crowned with a halo of light, sleep peacefully in the arms of a sphinx, its eyes turned to the heavens where the first stars have begun to appear. A successful artist within the French Academy, Merson never traveled to North Africa, but his use of archeological detail creates the illusion of an eyewitness account—breathing new life into a time‑honored subject.

As for the Seventh Plague, they have two
