ADORATION
OF THE MAGI

M A T T H E W
CHAPTER 2

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

The star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and THEY BOWED DOWN AND WORSHIPED HIM. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Thank you so much Dan. I’ve saved the blog post, and will read it later today. I love this stuff. The Master of Creation does all things well.

OK I couldn’t wait- reading it now...

“a recurring nova”

I’ve never heard of this Dan, thank you. I’ll be doing more research on this.

If we ever find documents that pinpoint the time of the Census that Augustus ordered, we may clarify the birthdate to some extent.

The date of the crucifixion is fairly well documented by the time of the Passover and the Sabbaths and High Holy Days and New moon cycles of the Jewish calendar.................

Which brings me to one of my hobby horses:

We already agree that our calendar is wrong, off by anywhere from 2 to 16 years, depending on who's doing the reckoning, and further in error because of the absence of a year zero.

The more fundamental point is that God did not intend us to mark His years by the birth of Jesus.

If He had intended this we would have a Biblical fixing of the date.

Further, the day of Jesus' birth is unremarkable as all men are born.

However, very few return from the dead, that event is remarkable, and it is the defining moment of Christianity, the very moment of proof that his sacrifice was not in vain. And the Bible gives a precise reference for when this happened!

Clearly this was the date the calendar was supposed to start!

For extra points, this makes our calendar off by anywhere from 17 to 30 years. That makes this something like Holy Year 1988 to Holy Year 1975, giving us anywhere from 12 to 25 years to get our affairs in order before the real end of the millennium...

What say you in 2022? In fact, did Jesus rise from the dead?

I have the DVD mentioned in the blog post. It’s been a few years since I last watched it, so I’ll have to re-watch it and refresh my mind to it.
It would be great if there were reliable astronomical records that could settle this issue once and for all, but until those records (if they exist) are found, I am content on leaving this occurrence as an Act of God, an act of faith.
The Bible says it happened, so it happened.
That’s good enough for me.

Christians believe that, it is an article of faith.

Faith blind.

You will believe that someone can be hard of hearing or deaf, you will believe that someone can be color blind or totally blind, you will believe that someone can have a poor sense of smell or none at all, you will believe that someone can have a speech impediment or be totally mute.

You will NOT believe me.

Faith is given: "we are saved by grace through faith".

Always the only question is, "Have you received it?"

You had not in 2005, nor at our latest encounter. I am only inquiring if that has changed.

Sadly, still missing the “through faith” part.

Gives me more opportunities to pray for that for you.

I have a large group of people for whose salvation I pray. I call all of you my "prebelievers".

Once you receive it, my prayers for you will change into seeing that faith grow. But that is then, this is now.

Here is an insight which has served me well and which you might find to be helpful.

The world is divided into two groups of people: those who believe Jesus rose bodily from death, and those who don't.

One group all go to heaven at their death or their rapture, but in the meantime they are getting to know their Lord better and better.
The other group will appear before Jesus at His Great White Throne Judgment, and their surprise at being there will be increased by their surprise at seeing Him there--because they thought His resurrection was bunk.

John captured this distinction between these two groups in 1 John 5:11-12:

God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He who has the Son has life;
he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

It's subtle.

Those who already "have" the Son know Him personally (at His instigation, through the Holy Spirit), and they need no further identification.
But for those who do not "have" Him, full identification as "the Son of God" is necessary.

Great Bio!
Love the story about your college paper.

Yes, the old ontological, cosmological and teleological arguments fall short. A rational proof for the existence of God does not exist. That’s why we need faith.
See Kierkegaard.
