FIRST TO HEAR OF THE SAVIOR |
Good Morning, Dan.
I have had the incredible privilege of standing in that very field and singing praises to the Lord. I even had a guitar! :-)
Nearly 40 years ago but still remember it fondly.
Good Morning Dan, and good morning to each of you.
Very exciting depictions. How did this terrifying event really appear? Probably like some of these.
Love the two by Pynacker, 60 & 61. Not two views, but two interpretations. Does the angel carry two bows? What might that mean?
Thank you Dan.
Angels are autonomous and pack whatever they wish.
Some wonderful paintings. Poor and humble shepherds were the first to hear of the greatest birth ever!
#45 by William Brassey Hole; #47 by Master of the Cortege; $51 by Rane and #62 by Thomas Cole.
The miniature at #56 comes from the magnificent Book of Hours of the Duke of Berry, illustrated in the 15th c. by the Limbourg Brothers. This Book of Hours is considered the most luxurious and most famous example of manuscript illumination in late medieval Europe.
Imagine Joseph's and Mary's reaction when those onlookers arrived. Then Simeon and Anna, then the Magi, then the flight to Egypt....
I don't think the angel is holding a bow (or bows), but rather an elongated scroll in appearance:
...as if making an announcement...
#62 by Cole is also noteworthy. I'm a big fan of Cole, and especially his 'Course of Empires'. He takes on big themes!
I imagine Cole might say we’re currently in the fourth phase, “Destruction”.
In #62, I like how Cole included the Guiding Star and seemingly has the angel pointing thataway.
We sang so much we almost missed the bus back to Bethlehem.
"We sang so much we almost missed the bus back to heaven. We had to run after it to get the driver to stop. After all that singing and running, were we ever out of breath!"
You have good eyes indeed; I stand corrected. Not bows at all.
If you hold down control while scrolling...it enlarges - or reduces font/painting, ‘pending which way you scroll :)
Yes, I really like his use of light.
