The Bible In Paintings 2 ENCOURAGEMENT FOR APPRECIATING AND APPLYING GOD'S MESSAGE |
D A N I E L CHAPTER 3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide. He then summoned all the provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. So they stood before it. Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “As soon as you hear the sound of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.” Therefore, all the peoples fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews. They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “There are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego—who pay no attention to you, O king. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “If you are ready to fall down and worship the image, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?” Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, THE GOD WE SERVE IS ABLE TO SAVE US FROM IT, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we WILL NOT serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. So these men were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire. The fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. NO OTHER GOD CAN SAVE IN THIS WAY.” Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar;
And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: “Please close that door.
It’s fine in here, but I greatly fear you’ll let in the cold and storm—
Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it’s the first time I’ve been warm.”

Like all the denizens sitting in hellfires, ol’ Sam is there by personal choice and wouldn’t have it otherwise.

The gates of hell are locked from the inside. Before I believed, that would have been me, no questions asked.
Now, as you suggest, it is insane to me, because He has made me a new creature. I have tasted God's goodness, and I am His forever:
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate [me] from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus [my] Lord.

Yes, and speaking of the times we’re living in, I believe we’re living in what will turn out to be the most amazing and astonishing century maybe ever.
This the 21st Century began with the Islamic attack (”911”) on America - a preview of coming attractions. And I believe it will end with Jesus Christ physically in Jerusalem crowned as King of Kings and Lord of lords over the whole world. (This will happen right after Armageddon, the bloodiest meeting of enemy armies ever - those that hate God (basically what’s left of the world) try to attack Heaven’s armies but are utterly vanquished by Jesus and his armies.)

To: Big Red Badger
Yes, but we're not waiting for Jesus and us to win. He vanquished Satan at the cross and we are now more than conquers though him that loved us.
We don't fight FOR victory, we fight FROM victory. And, yes, Armageddon will be a mighty victory clearing the world's decks of the powers of darkness and bringing the light of the glory of Christ to rule the world for 1000 years.
Wonderful!

Interesting question. I’m not sure how they measured furnace temperature 2500 years ago in Babylon. There were no thermometers until AD 1618 or so. You couldn’t use any kind of test plate inside the furnace because it would be too hot to retrieve it.
Adding more fuel would not be a reliable method. It’s possible they used different types of fuel, some that burned hotter than others. My guess is that it was a measure of distance. For example, if whatever they usually heated in that furnace was ready to go when you could comfortably approach the oven at, say, 3 feet, maybe seven times hotter could be determined if you couldn’t get any closer than around 21 feet. Something like that.

God uses flawed humans because that is the only kind of humans there is.Indeed, learning about David gives us hope.
David was flawed in so many ways,
yet
he was a man after God's own heart

Well expressed. When you meet David in heaven, be sure to tell him how his reprehensability so inspired you!
Recently, when the Spirit confronts me about my reprehensabilities, one of my meditations (in addition to repentance) has been marveling in depth at Jesus' complete victory over temptation. When I meet Him in heaven, I intend to tell him and hear the details.
