The Bible In Paintings: INTO THE FIERY FURNACE

The Bible In Paintings 2 ENCOURAGEMENT FOR APPRECIATING AND APPLYING GOD'S MESSAGE |
D A N I E L CHAPTER 3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide. He then summoned all the provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. So they stood before it. Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “As soon as you hear the sound of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.” Therefore, all the peoples fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews. They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “There are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego—who pay no attention to you, O king. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “If you are ready to fall down and worship the image, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?” Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, THE GOD WE SERVE IS ABLE TO SAVE US FROM IT, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we WILL NOT serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. So these men were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire. The fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. NO OTHER GOD CAN SAVE IN THIS WAY.” Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

Very dramatic depictions. Favorite, #1 from the Book of Hours of Henry II. Dore’ and Tissot always and the wonderful stained glass windows. It seems to me that in some painting, instead of an Angel there is Jesus with the 3 boys in the furnace.

We're safer in the fiery furnace with the Fourth Man than elsewhere without the Fourth Man. I love the Book of Daniel. As he was probably a lawyer in the Courts of Babylon who God would take aside every so often to show forth his Word and will.
Similarly, I am a lawyer in ABQ,NM, like Babylon, and God may occasionally take me out of my "comfort zone" to speak forth his Word, including about the times to come.

Can you imagine agine the impact it woild have if that were to happen today? Wow! Of course the deniers would still deny it were a miracle, just like they “explain” away the miracles of the Bible like, the crossing of the red sea, claimingmthat “natural strong winds could, have parted the seas naturally, allowing the folks to cross on dry land if the wind blew long enough to dry the sea bed out sufficiently for the people to cross “on dry land” as the bible, states”

Yes, the Holy Spirit is the perfect conduit of God’s Word.
God used Daniel through the Spirit to show forth his Word and prophesy the future of Israel and the world. The perfect Spirit gave the inspiration, Daniel was simply the imperfect messenger.
God used John the Apostle through the Spirit to show forth his Word and prophesy the future of Israel and the world. The perfect Spirit gave the inspiration, John was simply the imperfect messenger.
Eph 4:11-16 is as true today as it ever was. God always uses his imperfect messengers like you and I to show forth what the perfect Spirit is saying.

One of my favorite stories.
The detail in the story that always catches my attention is the fact that the fire in the furnace was so hot that even the soldiers who through the three men into the furnace were slain from the heat. As someone who has done some firefighting and been around iron smelters, intense heat can be extremely frightening. They should have been burned to a crisp in a few short minutes. That God preserved his servants from this fiery ordeal must have been utterly astonishing to the king and all who witnessed it.

That God preserved his servants from this fiery ordeal must have been utterly astonishing to the king and all who witnessed it. Nebuchadnezzar certainly drew the proper conclusion, as evidenced by his reactions in praising God and honoring His three servants:
“Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. NO OTHER GOD CAN SAVE IN THIS WAY.” Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.
But ol' Neb still didn't get it at a personal level--as we shall see tomorrow. God didn't give up on him, and now it appears we shall enjoy Nebuchadnezzar's company eternally in heaven.
