GOD PERMITS
TRAGEDY AND
CALAMITY

J O B
CHAPTERS 1&2

Job was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

His sons would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. Job would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

"Standing in the winged gathering that loves piety, before the face of God,
the evil spirit disparagingly demands that He afflict Job by stripping him of
everything, and that he conquer Job's triumphant heart in terrible ways."

One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine, a messenger came to Job and said,

“The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,

“The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,

“The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said,

“Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.”

In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

On another day the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”

So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

Great work Dan. We use this art as a tool to enhance our adult Sunday school lessons. It is well received. I encourage others to do the same.

Many great paintings. “Fenster” always but also a very original Collet at #19; Durer at #29 and my favorite, Georges de la Tour at #31. Love the play of light from the candle.

Music to my ears, Chauncey. God is always encouraging interaction with his Word, and art is one way He has done that for two millennia.

Poor guy. His wife seemed to be a bit of a b!tch, though.

Also, I'm not sure about the getting new children at the end. If you lose children, does it make up for it if you get new children? Even if the old kids were rotten, something doesn't quite jive with me.

I see Job's greatest gift as getting a glimmer of God. Being materially restored at the end wasn't necessary for understanding the story, unless it is a metaphor for eternal restoration. .

The story of Job has always fascinated me.
For all I have been through, I don’t blame God for anything.
Satan, yes.
Our failings, our sins, are our responsibility.
Insurance companies call weather related disasters “Acts of God”.
How do they know? “Acts of Satan” would make more sense.

Pete, my take is they are acts of God because, as clarified in Job's story, God permitted them to occur.

God allows free will. He could eliminate evil in this world; but, to do this, he would have to restrict everyone’s freedom — not just the freedom of the “other guy” — and people would eventually hate him for this more than they already do.

I see Job's greatest gift as getting a glimmer of God.

He got more than a glimmer, but it seems like Job would agree with you. When God shows up so dramatically, all else pales by comparison.

Very, very well said. God is eliminating evil as fast as possible, but first He must populate heaven by getting tens of billions to be born and have their opportunity.

Good Morning Dan, and good morning to each of you; I enjoy every comment.
Well done Dan, all are excellent choices. What an instructive story from God’s Word.

“Acts of God” because all of creation belongs to Him. That we can be harmed by them is a consequence of The Fall.

IMO.

Understood. I just don’t like blaming God for anything. I’d rather praise Him for all the good in this world. He created everything, of course.
I would rather give Him praise than be angry towards him.
If I’m gonna blame anyone it’s Satan for tempting Eve…🍎

It moves me, too.

Just now I happened to be reading 1 Peter 1, and he wrote something on-point:

...now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
