THE JEWS' RESCUE

CHAPTER 8

Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews. Then the king extended the gold scepter to Esther and she arose and stood before him.

“If it pleases the king,” she said, “let an order be written overruling the dispatches that Haman devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces. For how can I bear to see disaster fall on my people? How can I bear to see the destruction of my family?”

King Xerxes replied to Queen Esther and to Mordecai, “Now write another decree in the king’s name in behalf of the Jews as seems best to you, and seal it with the king’s signet ring—for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.”

At once the royal secretaries wrote out all Mordecai’s orders to the Jews, and to the satraps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush. Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king.

The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate any armed force of any nationality or province that might attack them and their women and children; and to plunder the property of their enemies.

The Jews struck down all their enemies with the sword, killing and destroying them, and they did what they pleased to those who hated them.

Good Morning Dan, and a happy week to all.
These are all wonderful Dan, thank you for your many hours of work to bring us the Word, and the paintings.

RE: #22 - Dan, I had never heard of Lilian Broca. This is one of the best parts of your Art Ministry, that some of us meet new artists we’ve never seen.

Anyway, I invite all who love mosaics to look at Broca’s art; she has great talent, and brings real emotion into her work.

I am not quite sure why all the paintings show Esther as fainting backwards. The Bible says she fell at his feet and pleaded with Ahasuerus. I see it more as an Oriental full bow. She wouldn’t have been falling backward.

You can imagine, then, my education as I have produced this series, for aside from a few famous masters I had never heard of any of them.

Broca does bring special gifts. Quite beyond her skill with the tiles, I really enjoy her storytelling.

Artistic license, for dramatic effect.

Also, as I recall, the Catholic version has extra passages, including Esther fainting before Xerxes. So, I cheated by using illustrations of that to depict her pleading.

These painting are horrid. The Book of Esther does not portray her fainting (even though she was fasting for 3 days), but falling at his feet. And Rembrandt’s drawing is atrocious. She looks like a drunk old madam in a brothel. WTH?

Thanks for your helpful comment. As I explained in post #7, the Catholic Bible does indeed describe Esther fainting, and lacking enough depictions showing her pleading, I substituted images showing her fainting. Apparently, however, I should have realized that they are, in fact, horrid. My apology. I suppose, then, that your series on Esther will omit them.

As for Mr. van Rijn's decisions, you will need to take those up directly with him.
