CHAPTER 1

King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, and he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials.

For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty. When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days, in the enclosed garden of the king’s palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest, who were in the citadel of Susa.

On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at. But when the attendants delivered the king’s command, Queen Vashti refused to come.

Then the king became furious and burned with anger. “According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?” he asked. “She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her.”

Then Memucan replied in the presence of the king and the nobles, “Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the peoples of all the provinces of King Xerxes. For the queen’s conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, ‘King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.’ This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the queen’s conduct will respond to all the king’s nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord.

“Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she. Then when the king’s edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest.”

The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memucan proposed. He sent dispatches to all parts of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, proclaiming in each people’s tongue that every man should be ruler over his own household.

EPHESIANS 5:22-33

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

WIVES, SUBMIT TO YOUR HUSBANDS AS TO THE LORD. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES, JUST AS CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH AND GAVE HIMSELF UP FOR HER to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church—for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

# 12 by Edwin Long. Another artist who had traveled to the middle-east, this painting reflects the impressions of those trips. Long depicts Vashti in her vulnerable moment, sadness and resignation, even her crown is on a table at her left perhaps foreshadowing that she will soon have to relinquish it. It is a huge paintings with beautiful details.

That one struck me, too, as the best of the bunch. I kept running across it--there seems to be a near-consensus for it.

The verse before Ephesians 5:22 “Wives submit yourselves to your husbands...” nobody seems to have read.

Ephesians 5:21 “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

The man goes out into the world to earn the family’s keep. The woman stays home to nurture the next generation. It is her domain. (See the end of proverbs below.) She makes 99% of the decisions. Then when she needs to be vetoed because something she decided is mistaken (often something crucial) he exercises his headship and overrules her in this 1%.
