U.S. Bishops Respond To Supreme Court Leak: We ‘Stand Ready To Help All Pregnant Women’

National–The head of the U.S. bishops’ pro-life committee said a leaked draft of a possible Supreme Court opinion that could upend abortion laws “reminds us of the urgent need for prayer and action at this pivotal moment in our country” and called for intense prayer and fasting.

“As Catholics, we care about every unborn child and every mother,” Archbishop William Lori said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our Church has consistently witnessed in word and deed that life begins at the moment of conception.”

The archbishop pointed to ministries run by Catholics that seek to support pregnant women and young mothers.

“At the same time, as we await the Court’s decision, we urge everyone to intensify their prayer and fasting that the final decision of the Court will bring about the reversal of Roe and Casey,” he continued. “We hope and pray for a change in our laws and stand ready to help all pregnant women in need in each of our communities.”

Other bishops have commented publicly as well, with many expressing optimism that the court will rule against abortion rights while also calling for greater resources for people facing unplanned pregnancies.

“Tonight I am thinking of all the years of hard work by pro-life people of all faiths and none,” Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco posted on Twitter on May 2, hours after the draft of the court’s opinion was published by Politico. “Years and years of patient advocacy, help for unwed moms, political engagement and more.”

Those hideous molesting priests (who were let into the priesthood when American seminaries stopped following the rule that men with homosexual inclinations should not be accepted) are long ago and far away now. Almost all were found out and stopped decades ago -- no thanks to the "lavender mafia" bishops who encouraged and in some cases hid them from the law.

The bishops involved have been removed, the priests are in prison, in remote monasteries doing penance, or dead. But the crimes they committed live on, doing tremendous damage to the Church and giving anti-Catholics a stick to beat Her with.

Proving once again that you're better off staying with tried and true rules that have worked for a couple thousand years, rather than imagining that you are more enlightened than anybody before or since . . .

God Bless these couple of arch bishops but the vast majority have remained silent as Biden touts St Augustine to support abortion, the UCSCCB ,United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, remain silent yet within a day of the election,even when it was being contested the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a congratultory letter to Biden on his election. Shame -is why som many Catholics, especially Hispanic Catholics now vote for the pro aborts

Several have been kicked upstairs - can't remember who it was that was given some make-work job at the Vatican. Others were persuaded to retire - e.g. McCarrick. Some are dead.

Our archdiocese is fairly conservative, the offenders here were laicized and/or imprisoned, if they weren't already dead. The worst offending priest here was an order priest (not diocesan) so they instituted a rule that any order priest must be under the direct supervision of a diocesan priest. That priest fled the jurisdiction, was extradited, convicted, and sent to prison. The priest who helped him flee the country was laicized and convicted of concealing a crime (I think, maybe harboring a felon) and served time also.

But probably the most effective tactic was the Vicar General (who is basically the archbishop's enforcer), a gruff and enormous Irishman, who called personally on every priest in the archdiocese and informed all of them that anybody who so much as looked sideways at a boy would immediately be turned over to the cops . . . at least what was left of him after the Vicar General got through with his personal "come to Jesus" invitation.

I will say that I'm not a big fan of the indefinite suspension of the statute of limitations - some of these complaints are with respect to activities that allegedly occurred 30, 40, or 50 years ago . . . and the alleged offenders are long dead. Understand perfectly that a statute should not begin to run until a minor reaches his majority -- but allowing claims to be brought forever creates a "bandwagon" effect that unscrupulous people can take advantage of. . . . we had a city bus here involved in a fender-bender on its way back to the garage, empty, and within 30 days there were 35-40 personal injury claims from people claiming they were on that bus. Because of the public outcry factor, claims against priests are far more tempting for the crooks. Conservatives ought to bear in mind that an accusation is not proof (e.g. Kavanaugh).
