CHAPTER 21

The people grew impatient; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

It must be noted that a Judean King, (Hezekiah?) many centuries later had the Brass Serpent destroyed as he was afraid it might become an idol.....................

They are all good! Especially the gorgeous stained glass windows. Funny that in #9, by Julius Schnorr Von Carolsfeld, the serpent is held to the pole by pegs. Bravo, Dan, beautifully illustrated story.

Offhand, I don't recall a plain explanation anywhere in Scripture--although the justification is plainly implied as punishment.

As I was assembling this thread, I wondered, Why snakes? The best I could manage lay in the symbolism Jesus noted to Nicodemus: Moses' pole stood in for the cross, which is our solution for sin. Since the first sin was prompted by Satan in the guise of a serpent, the snakes stand in for sin.

If you've been bitten by a snake/sin and realize you're dying, and you admit your need of God's solution by looking to the pole/cross, you're saved!

I particularly like the one where the snake is designed with a small head dress, as Egyptian sculptures of a snake god had at the time.
