Lavrov Calls What's Happening in Eastern Ukraine an Attack on Orthodoxy and on "Everything that is Russian"

Moscow, February 21, Interfax - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said he sees no other option but for Russia to recognize the Donbas self-proclaimed republics.

"Thus, we will send a powerful signal to the Russian world. Throughout these eight years, we have not been looking indifferently at how our compatriots, our citizens have been mistreated. That's why I do not see any other option," Lavrov said at a special meeting of the Russian Security Council on Monday.

When commenting on the opinion that [Russia] should hold off on a decision like this in the hope that the West will change its position," Lavrov said, "Do you mean giving the West two-three days to change its mind? It is certainly a matter of taste, but it is clear to everyone that it will not change its position."

"All arguments" in favor of adopting a decision to recognize the independence of the Donbas self-proclaimed republics have been put forth at the Russian Security Council's meeting, he said.

"I also see here an aspect such as the term 'genocide', which you mentioned at the press conference with [German Chancellor] Olaf Scholz. The fact that they are now trying to support this blatantly neo-Nazi, Bandera regime in Kyiv is a manifestation of genocide," the minister said.

Slavic people, Orthodox people, "everything that is Russian" are under attack in Ukraine, he said.

If the regions of the Donbas are “independent” states,
how can they be Russian citizens?

Who killed Kirov? Stalin asked...but he already knew!

Russia’s centuries of relentless expansion under the Czar was justified by the dual claims that all Slavs and all Orthodox Christians should be under Russian rule.

It seems the current regime has the same dreams.

“Ukrainian Orthodox and Russian Orthodox Churches divided recently.”

That is not accurate, though I do not blame you. Ecclesiastical hierarchy of the Orthodox Church and its Canon Law are not understood by the media at all, not well understood by people who aren’t Orthodox, and sometimes eludes people who are Orthodox.

I don’t wish to get into the specifics (again) but will just clarify that the UOC and ROC didn’t just recently split. The UOC was founded by a man who was an adulterer and likely compliant in murder of his flock. He was not elevated to Patriarch by the ROC. He then schismed himself and started the UOC and called himself Patriarch. This is a huge no no, and basically means he made up his own church, which he called UOC.

I’ll leave it at that for now, but just wanted to clarify that UOC and ROC didn’t just recently divide.

What is the dispute between the ROC and the Greek Orthodox regarding the Ukraine? Admittedly I don’t very much at all about them, just what I read in the papers.
