IMO, the priest was wrong to alter the words. I don’t think this story has anything to do with all the posts here about what baptism is or should or should not be. He was a Catholic priest and should have used the words the Catholic church wanted him to use. Why did he use “We”? Would Protestants complain if a minister performing a baptism referred to God as “our heavenly mother”? If the Catholics have decided the baptisms are bogus, that is their decision (I am not Catholic, BTW).
“Come back in to get your recalled baptism. And if you died before 2017…we are awful sorry that you must spend eternity because of our screw up.”
It ridiculousness like this that makes the people running the Catholic Church a laughing stock.
This story may have made God facepalm.
Hold up.
I/we baptize you in the name of The Father,Son and Holy Spirit..
Where are the ‘names’ in that ritual?
Ooopsss…….
Whether or not Neil Armstrong said “That’s one small step for man” or “That’s one small step for a man”, he still walked on the moon.
Anyone can perform a Christian baptism, as per Catholic teachings. You need water and the right words in the name of the Trinity: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The Catholic Church accepts all baptisms that follow this formula.
Why didn’t this priest know to use the word “I”? Or did he know but decide to change the wording on his own?
Whatever the reason, apparently this has happened before. Example: Different priest, different parish: https://www.aod.org/august-23-2020-letter-to-the-faithful-english
Oh, for Christ’s sake!
