Have you ever heard of a 1568 book written by the Italian painter, Giorgio Vasari, titled,

“Le vita de’ pi eccellenti architetti, pittori, ed scultori italiani”?

In English it is, "The Lives of the Most Eminent Italian Architects, Painters, and Sculptors“.

It was such a long title, that it was more commonly known as,
“Lives of the Artists”.

I actually found it and now own a copy of it.

In my seminary thesis on Church History, I wrote How The Renaissance Led to The Reformation". You can read it at the link if you desire. It is a bit long, but I have had much compliments on it, and was even advised by my professor that I should consider expanding on my theory for a book. Just another book I'll probably never write. But I digress.

In my introduction I offer evidence that Vasari was probably the first one on record to actually use a term that we now know as, "renaissance", by using the Italian word, "rinascit". He did so in his book. Below is the paragraph from my thesis where I mention it.

Encyclopedias and history books all seem to point out that the word Renaissance is French for “rebirth”. However, the Italian painter Giorgio Vasari was probably the first person to describe this era as the “Renaissance” when he used the word, "rinascit". In 1568 he authored a book called, “Le vita de’ pi eccellenti architetti, pittori, ed scultori italiani” (“The Lives of the Most Eminent Italian Architects, Painters, and Sculptors“) the title more commonly used is, “Lives of the Artists”. Vasari applied this concept specifically to a “revival”, or “rebirth”. In the chapter titled “Andrea di Cione, Spinello, Dello, and Paolo Uccello” where he wrote;

“In the year 1350 was formed the Company and Fraternity of the Painters in Florence, for the masters were there in great numbers, and they considered that the arts of design had been born again in Tuscany, and indeed in Florence itself.”

Maybe when you start your next series, you might find a few gems of wisdom to share from within the confines of the covers to which Vasari's book is ensconced.

Thanks, Chuck, but this is the wrong venue for Vasari's gems of wisdom. In my new series, God has impressed on me the need to strip everything away except His Word and the art illustrating it. In designing the new series, therefore, I have been rather brutal in doing that, as you will see.
