Sorry, I thought your question was "How might John have known about dragons."

Where did the idea of ‘dragons’ originate?

That's a separate question and also a good one. There's probably been lots of theories on that.

Even the Aztecs and Mayas had a ‘Feathered Serpent’ god that anyone else in the world would call a ‘dragon’ at first sight............
