BINGO! It's the same pride that convinces them they will be saved BECAUSE they do good works, obey the commandments, etc. To rest in Jesus Christ who saves us by grace through faith in His finished work on the cross leaves them with nothing to boast about. But, they will swear up and down that they DO believe in the gospel of grace - that we are saved by faith and not by our works! Their self-righteous pride blinds them from comprehending that to say we are saved by God's grace and not by our works but that unless we do good works we won't be saved is no different than saying our works save us. By that reasoning faith plays a role but it's only a supporting one - it's not THROUGH faith. They remain unable to understand their own confusion.
It's a simple concept - WHO gets the glory? If it's my faith and my good deeds, obedience to the commandments, giving, etc. which saves me, then Jesus has to share the glory with me. But when salvation comes by grace through faith in what Christ has done for me and NOT because of my works - which the Scriptures plainly state - then Jesus gets ALL the glory.
Amen!
He alone is a worthy of praise.
