GOSPEL of JOHN
Chapter 20, Verses 11-18
Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”
“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

22.04 lbs would have been more perfect.
Exactly 10 kg.
Alas, the world is not a perfect place.
And, not to put too fine a point on it, nonbelievers’ presence will no longer be needed, beginning in year 1001.
But that's exactly my point: it will be, beginning in year 1001.
Microsoft is claiming their ultra high density data storage will outlast the Earth. That seems a little excessive...
There is nothing saying the data I'm fixin' to archive can't be used next century, or in any random year along the entire future timeline be it 100 years, 500 years, 1,000 years, 5,000 years, or even possibly 10,000 years.
Better to have it and not need it...
As an aside, where would our understanding of The Old Testament be without the Dead Sea Scrolls?
And my point is that’s only for a 1,000 year reign, then Satan returns in full force for a final battle.
I don’t want the good side to be on the wrong end of of an ancient game most recently played as dodos and sailors, or maybe Tasmanians and Europeans!
This "(medium) density data storage technology" involves bricks? I doubt that even fired bricks will withstand God's REPLACEMENT of this planet with a new earth.
'But this is The Bible! Aren't you an agnostic?'
'Yeah, I am, but The Bible is the foundational document for our civilization.'
Then, believe what it says.
Were I a True Believer, I’d be reluctant to doubt God could preserve knowledge on any humble medium through a replacement of the current world.
Not my place to tell Him what He can and can’t do!
Even as an agnostic, blind to faith in the same sense a person can be blind to the distinction between red and green, I still can’t see green the way you do, no matter how many times you insist I can, I can, if only I just try hard enough.
NO NO NO! That is the Great Stumbling Block: trying, trying, trying to save yourself.
We are saved by grace:
You are the one insisting I can 'see green' the way you do.
I can't. I don't try.
Perhaps some day I will be cured of my faith blindness.
In the mean while I, like everyone else on Earth am flawed.
I'm just working with what I have to preserve what I treasure, even if I don't fully understand it myself.
1. the average number of times people hear the Gospel before believing is SEVEN or EIGHT, with wide variances (I know a woman whose husband took fifty years)
2. researchers have not found any believers who could not identify at least one Christian who was actively praying for their salvation (it is a spiritual battle)
3. I am praying for you
I expect you’ve heard of CS Lewis. His conversion story is representative. One day he rode to the zoo in a motorcycle sidecar. Later he said, “When I got into the sidecar I did not believe that Jesus Christ was God’s Son, and when I got out I did.”
Thank you
Looking through this collection of art (thanks Dan!) I noticed something that has not been commented upon in the artistic depictions nor in our commentary. That is:
1) Jesus requests that Mary let go of Him because He’s going to ascend to His Father. He’s been resurrected, but has not yet presented His Firstfruits offering to the Father in heaven.
2) Just minutes later after He has appeared to Mary Magdalene, He appears to the two other Mary’s (Alphaeus and Salome Zebedee) and they do cling to Him, apparently as long as they wished to. To me this indicates Jesus had completed His trip to heaven and returned.
Matthew 28:9 And [b]as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
I read your conversation with null and void with fascination. The two scriptures that come to mind are:
1) John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
2) Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
The conclusion: God must act before we can be saved. He acts by giving us the faith to believe. Then we must act on that faith He gives us.
Thus, no one will be saved without God’s action, so no one can boast.
Well, it’s inside baseballish, Jeff, but it appears you’re onto something there.
Exactly. Nicely summarized. How well I remember when He deposited my faith into me—and how then I responded. It remains the great highlight of my entire life.
“Well, it’s inside baseballish, Jeff, but it appears you’re onto something there.”
LOL! Perhaps it’s speculative, but it’s worth it to be called ‘inside baseballish’. That’s a new one, Dan.
“How well I remember when He deposited my faith into me—and how then I responded. It remains the great highlight of my entire life.”
Same here. I was 12, building a model airplane or rocket, thinking about the Big Bang and I realized it had to have come from something. The alternative cosmology at the time was continuous creation, which speculated hydrogen atoms were created as the universe expanded. I liked that because it meant God had to exist, to create the hydrogen atoms.
Now in both scientific theories about the creation of the universe God had to exist.
I felt such peace, knowing God existed. I knew then that everything would turn out all right. This was 1968 and I was quite upset with how the Vietnam war was going. I couldn’t understand why we weren’t winning it. Regardless, I now know God would take care of us.
