Peter, the waves, and today’s news stories

With so many things in the news today, most of which can be disheartening and demoralizing, and even be a cause of worrisome fear for many, it is most important to have faith and trust in God.

Having been somewhat of a news junkie over the years, I have come to a place now where I realize I often had my eyes more on the waves than on Jesus.

Even though it increases our faith in the things which the Bible stated would happen when we see the very events unfolding before our eyes, if we become too mindful of them to where we start to become full of cares and worries for the future, it it can actually weaken our faith. Not that we don’t believe what we are seeing, but that we may focus on what we see to the point we begin to forget that God is bigger.

When we start looking at the waves to the point we become fixated upon them, we fall into the same pitfall Peter did when walking on the water to meet Jesus.

When Peter stepped out of the boat and began to walk to Jesus on the water, he beheld the boisterous waves and taking his eyes off of the Lord he began to sink. He then cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

It is good to be aware of the things happening up to a point, however, many things in the news today can become boisterous waves that frighten us if we become preoccupied with them and take our eyes off the Lord who is the hope of salvation. We are not to focus upon the raging waves of fear, despair, and hopelessness or we too will become fearful and also begin to sink. We are not to preach fear, but hope, life, and the overcoming power of Jesus Christ.

The only hope in this world for mankind is in Jesus Christ and blood he shed for the remission of sins. Rather than focusing on the cares and fears of this life, let us trust and focus our hearts, souls, and minds upon him. We must have a repentant heart and make straight paths for our feet daily. In this we know we can trust him with our lives so that whatever comes we can find hope and peace through faith in him knowing that he is our Redeemer, regardless of how big and furious the waves would seem.

I think it could also be said Peter began to sink because he didn’t see Jesus calming the waves when he wanted Him to. Sometimes we react too soon to what’s happening around us or the circumstances....much of which is beyond our control.

Much is beyond our control and we must come to terms with it. Only faith in Christ can deal with that.
