1. As I understand it, Mary is the Anglicized form of Miriam, and I presume parents were naming their daughters in honor of Moses' sister--hence, the popularity

2. Scholars are split whether Martha's sister Mary was the Magdalene; artists are also split, so I avoided painting-titles--though not the paintings themselves--claiming her as the Magdalene
