Ch. 4 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. | Ch. 1 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. | Ch. 4 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. |

"Jesus Ministered to by Angels"
BOTICELLI lived during the time of the Medici Family so he knew the evil they had infested into the Church...............
If and When you retire from medicine, you could become a detective.
The “priests” are hermit monks. What better disguise to fool someone than a gentle, old, innocuous monk? So the devil thought....
Satan is willing and even eager to use the church as one of his ensnarement tools. “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles”
With BIRD FEET?..........................
Jesus knew who Satan was, there was no attempt to hide his identity. They knew each other from the beginning. The painter(s) were making a not too subtle statement................
In my opinion, the artists wanted the viewers to know that it was not a real monk but the devil, thus the feet. We are looking at these paintings with 21st c. eyes, we need to keep in mind who the audiences were then.
The Medici’s ran the Church during Botticelli’s time. Everyone knew they were corrupt and evil..................
Given eta's points helps me think about it.
They were a rather suspicious people, and largely ignorant and superstitious...so it's not a huge stretch to imagine the artists are playing into those crude beliefs by painting beasts disguised by harmless itinerant monks.
Corrupt and evil, very true. At the same time they sponsored magnificent works of art which we continue to enjoy today. There would be no masterpieces, in art, architecture, without the Church or the aristocracy.
Imagine what redeemed, sanctified and glorified humans, like you, Alba, will achieve in the New Creation. You’re in training now, Level One, and then you will surpass it all.
#1 Cornicelius: Stunning portrait of Jesus.Intriguing discussion today of the monk’s clothing, etc.#3 Copping: Exceptional body language and knowledge of anatomy. The rendering of Christ’s hands and feet really moved me.
#11 Titian: the depiction of Satan as a winsome child or young female is disconcerting. Christ’s face and hand are magnificently painted, but survey says: doesn’t go the distance.
#13 Tissot: eye-catching composition.
#22 Von Carolsfeld: Wacky body language aside, the simplicity of the two figures and the background coloration is quite compelling.
#26 Scheffer: I love this clean-lines work of art, that foreshadows the Art Nouveau style by half a century.
#37 Mosaic, Palermo: Ma, quant’è bellissimo! I imagine it is stunning in person with the gold leaf.
#40 Tissot: Our friend JasTiss has managed to make the angels look like demons at a glance, so I’m not thrilled with this otherwise interesting graphical composition.
#26 by ARY SCHEFFER, 1854
This one is probably the most accurate. Lucifer was an angel before his fall and was not a horned devil as is usually depicted.....................
LOL! Just exactly how I picture you....
With the proviso that noncorporeal angels can assume any physical form they wish, and regularly do.
And they don’t have wings.......................
Unless they wish to.........................
True, but why would they need wings if they can teleport themselves anywhere in the universe in a nanosecond? Just for dramatic effect?......................
When revealing themselves to gullible humanity, often dramatic effect is one of their principal goals, especially among the fallen cohort. For example, UFOs, and with your Air Force experience and interest in astronomy I expect you’re familiar with the subject, have always mirrored the technology of the times—for dramatic effect.
