About the symbolism of seashells. The seashell, especially the scallop, is the symbol of baptism in Christianity. A famous one is the symbol for the Apostle James the Greater. St. James used the scallop shell during his pilgrimage to beg for food and water. Even the poorest people could fill the small shell, so he always found help along his way. Later, followers of St. James wore the scallop-shell symbol on their hats and clothes and it became the symbol of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

But what about the painting with a snail mollusk shell? A few of them have clam shells. Perhaps the painters didn’t know the difference? .............

I just looked up some paintings of Apostle James the Greater.

In one, GREEK 18th century, he appears to be holding a NAUTILUS SHELL.

I think artists just didn’t know sea shells and sea creatures very well.............................

Seashell Symbolism = Inside Baseball. Some fans, like me, are perfectly happy with just enjoying the ballgame.

I don’t know much about seashells. I do know that all along the Camino to Compostela, there are these kind of shells to indicate the way. They even are part of the architecture of the Basilica.

Maybe the nautilus shell, because of its spiraled form is a metaphor for one’s spiritual evolution.
