Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 35

Psalm 35

Of David.

1 Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight against those who fight against me.
2 Take up shield and armor;
    arise and come to my aid.
3 Brandish spear and javelin[a]
    against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
    “I am your salvation.”

4 May those who seek my life
    be disgraced and put to shame;
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back in dismay.
5 May they be like chaff before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord driving them away;
6 may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

7 Since they hid their net for me without cause
    and without cause dug a pit for me,
8 may ruin overtake them by surprise—
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9 Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you, Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
    the poor and needy from those who rob them.”

11 Ruthless witnesses come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good
    and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth
    and humbled myself with fasting.
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14     I went about mourning
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;[b]
    they gnashed their teeth at me.

17 How long, Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life from these lions.
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;
    among the throngs I will praise you.
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason
    maliciously wink the eye.
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations
    against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha!
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

22 Lord, you have seen this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far from me, Lord.
23 Awake, and rise to my defense!
    Contend for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”

26 May all who gloat over my distress
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication
    shout for joy and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
28 My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,
    your praises all day long.

Psalm 112

1 Praise the Lord!
Happy are those who fear the Lord,
who greatly delight in his commandments.
2 Their descendants will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures for ever.
4 They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright;
they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.
5 It is well with those who deal generously and lend,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
6 For the righteous will never be moved;
they will be remembered for ever.
7 They are not afraid of evil tidings;
their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord.
8 Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
9 They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor;
their righteousness endures for ever;
their horn is exalted in honour.
10 The wicked see it and are angry;
they gnash their teeth and melt away;
the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

By now you know I am a voracious reader, because I do not hesitate to slip a book-review into this Thread from time to time. I always want it to have something to do with Spirituality and the theme of the thread, and today will be one of those days.

Before I came to Faith in Jesus, I was a (not-so) Radical Feminist. (I say "not-so" because I was not Pro-ERA or Abortion...I just wanted to be able to get my "RIGHTS). Anyway, at the time I believed that "Religion" was the enemy of women and read quite a few books that reinforced that notion. One book I read was written by a woman professor, that specifically lambasted Judaism and Christianity, which further cemented my resistance to the Gospel. I will not give the book any free advertising by naming it here, but it caused me a great deal of bitterness towards men and religion.

I have shared before of how a Brother shared the beautiful Proverbs 31 Passage about Womanhood, which opened my eyes and led to my Salvation. Here was a woman who was smart, beautiful, artistic, creative, a small business owner, and her husband's pride and joy. There was no hint of the oppression and misery that had been the accusation of the books I had read.

Now, let's fast-forward a half-century to two books I picked up at the Thrift Store just last week. Both were about tragic princesses in oppressive places. We all know about Princess Diana, who wasn't really "oppressed", but the two princesses in these books were Masako, married to the crown prince of Japan, and Princess "Sultana"(Pseudonym) of Saudi Arabia. I read the book about the Japanese princess first. This brilliant lady, a Harvard Graduate, with several degrees and speaker of many languages, was a ranking member of the Diplomatic Corps. The Crown Prince met her at an official function and took a shine to her. After much negotiation and preparation, she was married to the Prince, and that's when her troubles began. Unlike Diana, who campaigned against Landmines, Princess Masako's only purpose was to produce a male heir and perform endless, intricate Shinto Rituals to ensure the welfare of the country. Although the People loved her, the entrenched bureaucracy despised her, and the media and paparazzi were relentless. After years of infertility, IVF Treatments and Fertility drugs, Masako finally had a baby...but it was a GIRL. Masako became more and more reclusive , and it is speculated that she had a nervous breakdown, much like her Mother-In-Law, the Empress of Japan. The author of the book had no qualms about blaming the Japanese System of Government, The Shinto Religion, and the Entrenched "Swamp" for Masako's tragic downfall.

The second book was radically different in it's approach. The opening disclaimer proclaimed that the book is NOT about "the ancient and beautiful "Religion of Peace" (you KNOW what I'm talking about!) Throughout the book, which makes Masako's misery look like heaven on earth, Sultana keeps interjecting apologetics for Islam ("This is not what the Prophet meant" etc). We are talking about baby murder (because it's a girl), locking teenage girls in dark solitary rooms for months at a time, child marriage and prostitution, The Veil, The "Religious Police", etc. The book goes on and on about these horrific practices, and finally ends up blaming American Oil Companies! (I kid You NOT...you can't make this stuff up.) Of course, this totally ignores the oppression of women in other Islamic countries that are neither Oil-Rich nor Arab. Afghanistan is a perfect example, as is Pakistan. But, Sultana refuses to name the real culprit because it could mean her death and the death of her two daughters. The book went into "The ROUND FILE" without being finished.

These two books reminded me of the polemic I read 40 years ago, that blamed the oppression of women squarely on the shoulders of the Judaeo-Christian Ethic. Nevertheless, the Proverbs 31 Woman was from the Jewish Scriptures. St. Paul, who was a pious Pharisee before his Damascus Road Experience, says this:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28 NIV)

Since my own "Damascus Road Experience" I have been Free in Christ, and very involved (through music mostly) with ministry. While there is some disagreement across denominations regarding the role of women in the Church, there is no comparison to the blatant oppression that exists in other world religions.
