My understanding, as it has been explained to me, is that forgiveness is releasing a person from the debt they owe you for a wrong done to you.

It’s like a legal contract thing, handing it off to God for Him to take care of.

It takes a great deal of the emotion out of it when there’s a lot of anger and hurt.

Also, not all relationships can be restored, nor should they be. Forgiveness does not means putting yourself in a position to be sinned against again. This is particularly true in cases of abuse.

Food for thought. One definition for forgiveness (not mine) is that forgiveness is no longer having an interest in that person for good or ill.
