Massive Cross Erected on Mountain Over Northern Kosovo Town [+video]

A massive metal cross overlooking a northern Kosovo town was erected last week, thanks to Church authorities and the local Orthodox faithful.

The cross, 65 feet high and 39 feet wide, stands 2,970 feet above sea level overlooking Leposavić, a town with an ethnic Serb majority in the North Kosovo region, which functions largely autonomously from the rest of Kosovo, with its Albanian majority.

Work on arranging the space for the cross began a little over a year ago, reports telegraf.rs.

“Thanks to Bishop Teodosije, the people of this area managed to raise the cross on Kamilja Mountain. With its arms, it embraces all those who will come here and pray to God and live in love,” the Serbian Orthodox Church stated.

It is expected that residents of Leposavić and the surrounding areas will come to the cross to pray often.

Watch a video of the installation of the cross:

Troparion — Tone 1

O Lord, save Your people, / and bless Your inheritance. / Grant victories to the Orthodox Christians / over their adversaries. / And by virtue of Your Cross, / preserve Your habitation.

Kontakion — Tone 4

As You were voluntarily raised upon the cross for our sake, / grant mercy to those who are called by Your Name, O Christ God; / make all Orthodox Christians glad by Your power, / granting them victories over their adversaries, / by bestowing on them the Invincible trophy, Your weapon of Peace.

Kosovo is Serbia!!!

Doesn’t a Orthodox cross have two horizontal bars, with the top one being smaller?

Only about two-thirds as large as the statue overlooking Rio.

An Orthodox cross has three bars; the top two are at a 90 degree angle to the upright.

The topmost is smallest and represents the backboard for the inscription “The King of the Jews” which Pilate commanded be placed in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

The middle bar is the beam onto which Jesus’s hands were nailed.

The lowest bar is placed at an angle; the higher side is toward the left as one faces the cross but is on the right when viewed from the cross itself. It represents the elevation of the repentant thief at Christ’s right into Paradise.

“In the midst, between two thieves, was Your Cross found as the balance-beam of righteousness; For while one was led down to hell by the burden of his blaspheming, the other was lightened of his sins unto the knowledge of things divine, O Christ God glory to You.”

My previous post not withstanding, Orthodox also use a one barred “budded” cross in liturgical art, including jewelry.

The cross on the mountain is a much grander version of my Chrismation cross.

But does it light up at night, like the Millennial Cross, which overlooks Skopje, Macedonia?
