Cardinal Dolan on Biden Communion Denial: 'I Wouldn't Do It'

While the incident was a good teaching moment, Dolan said that he himself would not deny anyone communion

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York has responded to questions about the denial of Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden last Sunday.

On an October 31 interview with Fox News, Dolan said that he thought the incident was a good teaching moment about the Eucharist and the seriousness of denying Church teaching, but that he would not himself deny anyone reception of the Eucharist.

“So whether that prudential judgment was wise, I don’t want to judge him either,” Dolan said of Fr Robert Morey, who denied Holy Communion to Biden. “I wouldn’t do it.”

“Sometimes a public figure will come and talk to me about it. And I would advise them, and I think that priest (Morey) had a good point, you are publicly at odds with an issue of substance, critical substance, we’re talking about life and death and the Church,” Dolan said.

Receiving the Eucharist “implies that you’re in union with all the Church believes and stands for. If you know you’re not, well, integrity would say, ‘uh oh, I better not approach Holy Communion.’ That’s always preferable than to make a split-second decision and denying somebody,” Dolan added.

Last Sunday, Morey denied communion to 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden at Mass at St Anthony Catholic Church in Florence, South Carolina, because of the politician’s public support of abortion.

“Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden,” Morey, who is the pastor of St Anthony’s, explained in a statement sent to CNA.

Dolan would have given Communion to Obama or Castro or Stalin.

Why would this be a split-second decision?

The priest would see the “pro-abort” during Mass, or perhaps even before Mass started; he could make his decision on what he would do if the “pro-abort” approached him before he even begins to distribute Communion.

The only surprise to me is that Dolan didn’t jump at the opportunity to condemn the Faithful Priest.

So glad I left the Roman catholic church!

You don't leave Jesus because of Judas... neither is it justified to leave the Church because of the sins of the clergy.

God gave us free will. You exercised yours. Don't blame it on the sins of others. If you thought you would find better people elsewhere, you were mistaken. We are all sinners.

I do not remain because of good priests and I will not leave because of bad. I stay because of the true and consistent teachings and doctrine carried in Her bosom from Christ to us today. My priest gave a bad homily? I can read better from St John Chrysostom or any Doctor of the Church in history back to the Apostles from their Epistles.

Dolan has always been a statist ass-kisser. The NYC marxist political establishment has him by the balls.

You don't leave Jesus because of Judas... neither is it justified to leave the Church because of the sins of the clergy.

When does the Church stop being the Church? If the doctrines of the Bible are ignored by the clergy then doesn't the Church become a club? People meet at this club and agree that the teachings of the Bible are too strong to abide to. Killing of children in the womb is not so bad if we can justify it. The sodomy marriage is one of love not as the Bible claims an abomination. The pedophile is just misunderstood and requires 'love' from children to survive. The Church becomes an apostate Church when they ignore the teachings of Christ! That is what is happening today. Politicians have NOT been denied the Eucharist because there is a quid pro quo! The Catholic Church allows the pro-abortion, pro-sodomy politicians the Eucharist and the Church becomes more elevated in society. If one dares to upset this agreement then the Church would have to deal with politicians hostile to the Church. The seats would empty and the politicians would find ways to attack the Church using political and powerful resources from the investigatory branch of the government... we all know how that goes!
