Jesus is the Life Preserver. Mary is the Rope He Chose To Reel Us In.
The Most Ancient Tradition | 06-16-2019 | Charles O'Connell

Posted on 06/16/2019 4:55:18 AM PDT by CharlesOConnell

In Captains Courageous, with Spencer Tracey, Freddy Batholomew is a blowhard millionaire's son who is socially, poorly adjusted. He uses his father's incredible wealth, to bully his classmates and even his teacher, but he's roundly disliked, and ostracized. While on an ocean liner, he unsuccessfully tries to impress some other boys by eating 5 ice cream sodas. When he has to throw up, to escape the mocking boys, he runs into a lifeboat area to evade their ridicule while purging his overindulgence, and manages to fall overboard into the ocean.

Instances of people falling overboard into the open ocean are rather commonly reported in the news. Usually they are lost, but if by chance their accidents are observed and a life-preserver is thrown to them, is that the end of the story, do we just say, "oh, well, you have a floatation device, you're okay now"?

No, we have to pull them in. The life-preserver, the lifesaver, is only part of the formula for saving their lives. There is also a rope, which must be attached to the life-preserver, and must be used to finally accomplish their salvation.

Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and man. But on the man side of the equation, unlike the radical individuality most typified by J.J. Rousseau, we who life the life of Christians do so in communities. But even then, we do not abide as atomistic individualists. We live our Jesus-oriented life in relation to our fellows. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." – Hebrews 10:25.

Jesus' first disciple was his mother, who gave us the total account of his early life and who "treasured these things up in her heart". "A sword will pierce your own soul too, so that the secret thoughts of many hearts might be revealed". On the cross, he gave his mother to John to take in his home, but when you take your master's mother, she takes care of you.

Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, voices, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery.
And another portent appeared in heaven; behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems upon his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth; she brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which to be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. …
And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had borne the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river which the dragon had poured from his mouth. Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. - Rev 11:19 -- 12:17

She forms the body of Christ. She schools her son's disciples. Those who won't attend her school, remain ignorant.

We are in a time when any merely human institution would be washed away. Our churches are going under the shadow of a new Heresy of Ba'al of Peor, as when the Hebrew people were successfully attacked and overwhelmed through human sexuality. Our churches are now pro-gay and as soon as the civil authority authorizes child sex, they will be indistinguishable from the denizens of the town of Sodom: "Bring them out that we may know them".

Jesus' mother forms the few of the elect who will resist being fooled by the great apostasy. Those who will not avail themselves of the lifeline of Mary, will be lost.

1Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, 2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, 3it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; 4so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught. Luke 1:1-4

Trying to save face?? Wow, you have a vivid imagination. Is the Russian Orthodox Church not still Eastern Orthodox even though it is not currently in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople?

Could you post a link to where Mary wore a knee length skirt at Fatima?

I just noticed that somehow I left off the end of my post:

And besides, the article referenced was written in 2011 (while they were still in communion) and states: "With God’s help, we were able to demonstrate that the teaching on personal salvation held by the entire Orthodox Church..."

Very nice; you did research.

Now that we’ve done so, here’s the issue; Orthodox teaches that salvation is a gift from God. Sure, we disagree on eternal security, but I wasn’t talking about eternal security anyways.

Orthodox places emphasis on theosis while both Rome and Protestants talk about forensic justification. Theosis puts emphasis on the effect of a regenerated life in Christ while forensic justification emphasizes the cause.

But EO will still make it clear that works do not earn salvation.

Catholicism changes the definition of ‘gift’ halfway through, from something given without merit into something you have to merit yourself.

And that’s the issue. If Catholicism teaches you have to do good deeds in order to merit eternal life, that’s just salvation by works prettied up in a new title. And on this thread itself you have Catholics insisting you’re saved by works.

But if works DON’T earn eternal life, then why are y’all so angry about sola fide?

As for my ‘presumption’ take a look at what afvet posted upthread about how he’s jumped so easily on the salvation by works train.

And yet you want me to believe what you claim Rome teaches instead of what he claims?

He doesn't list them, but it doesn't matter. The point is he is saying their teachings are by word of mouth or by letter

The letters were preserved...God said he would preserve his words forever...Thus we have our bible..

2Th_2:15  Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

You have neglected to notice that Paul didn't sanction anyone to continue to create traditions that would become church dogma or doctrine...

You have also neglected to acknowledge the verse does NOT say, 'hold the traditions you have been taught by word which are not contained in the written scriptures'...
What it does say is, 'hold the traditions you have been taught by word of mouth, OR hold the traditions you have been taught by the written scriptures'...
Hold fast to the traditions whether taught by word of mouth or written scriptures...

Doesn't occur to you they may be the same thing, eh???

The verse says you can chose either, the oral word or the written scriptures...Doesn't that seem a little odd, unless they are the same thing...

And since none of those supposed Catholic traditions by word of mouth survived history the poor folks back then had to resort to the written epistles and only got part of the truth???

However, God clears it all up with his instructions to Paul when it comes to those Catholic traditions:

2Th 3:14  And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

2Th 3:6  Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

Obviously that 'tradition' was contained in the scriptures, or was the scriptures...

He wasn’t present for his teaching, neither was Timoty, Luke, and likely that some were written by different Johns not the apostle. Some, like Hebrews, there is no agreement who wrote it. Someone passed it orally to them. That’s the only point. Some was written 2 generations after Jesys death

No scripture was written 2 generations after Jesus' death...The apostle Paul spent 3 years with the Risen Jesus Christ to learn what Jesus wanted for the Gentile church (how does a Christian not know that?)...That's why Paul's epistles are authoritative and supersede any doctrines that were written in the four Gospels, James, Hebrews and Acts dealing with the Gentile church...

It us generally known that he never met him.

Generally known by whom?

Nor is it relevant it Paul never actually MET Jesus.

Your contention in post 622 was At least Luke and Paul were never present for any of his teaching.

That is different than Paul actually MEETING Jesus.

You're moving the goal posts.

Whether Paul actually MET Jesus or not does not make a case that Paul was not present at any of His teachings.

I could be present at a Trump rally and never meet the president. Different issues.

Luke says in the first chapter he is compiling testimony of others from memory.

No he does not. He NEVER says it's from memory.

And even if it was, that does not make it *tradition* of any kind.

Luke 1:1-4 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Probably more I’m going from memory.

Which proves the reliability of *oral tradition*, very nicely, thank you.

Look it up it isn’t difficult

You need to follow your own advice so you know better what you are arguing for and can make a case instead of making errors.

Timothy was Paul’s companion,

Paul had a lot more traveling companions that Timothy.

Luke was one of them and in the book of Acts you can tell where Luke was actually traveling with Paul and writing eyewitness accounts of what happened.

Read it some time and pay attention when you do. You'll notice it.
