In what has been interpreted as a dig at the current crisis crippling the US government, the leader of the Catholic Church has publicly criticised those who use walls to create division and sow fear.
At a youth rally in Panama this week Pope Francis, whose focus on the poor and marginalised have made him a target from those within the Vatican opposed to his efforts to reform, urged the packed crowd to build bridges rather barriers.
The Supreme Pontiff deviated from his prepared remarks on Thursday to praise the estimated 250,000 young people, many waving their national flags, for coming together even though they speak different languages and hail from different cultures.
“These builders of walls that sow fear are looking to divide people and box them in,” the Pope said.
His comments have been interpreted as a clear reference to US President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall at the US-Mexico border.
The Pope asked the crowd: “What do you want to be?”
The crowd chanted back: “Builders of bridges.”
For the past month, the US Government has been in partial shutdown after Mr Trump declared he would not end the shutdown unless the Senate passed a bill to fund his border wall with Mexico.
Last night, both Republicans and Democrats could not reach agreement over a way to end the political impasse.
A bill backed by the president to end the shutdown by funding the wall and a separate bill supported by Democrats to reopen shuttered agencies without such funding did not get the votes required to advance in the 100-member chamber.
Immediately following the failed effort, Democratic and Republican senators spoke on the Senate floor and urged quick passage of a three-week, stopgap funding bill to end the partial government shutdown for now.
Some Democrats pledged to support more border security funding than was included in the Democrats’ bill that was blocked in the Senate on Thursday.
But the White House issued a warning. A three-week funding bill would "only work if there is a large down payment on the wall," spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

Every house has four walls. Heaven has a gate. Jerusalem had walls in the Bible. New Jerusalem, in Revelation, has walls, built by God himself. Why are walls suddenly considered immoral by us if God doesn’t?

Why would anybody change their lifelong beliefs, their deep faith, their religious passion for a man like Francis?
You ignore Francis, you revile Francis, you despise Francis, but you do not give him the power to give up your religious beliefs that easily.
He is a loser, and when you recognize that, you cannot make him a winner by questioning your Faith. Do not give him that power. He will be gone soon enough.

God’s city will be 1400miles squared with gemmed walls 144 feet thick!
Not like there is any mention of a wall in the bible or anything. Duh.
What about the wall around the Temple in Jerusalem?
Because Nancy Pelosi decreed that walls are immoral. Her word overrides anything in Scripture.
