Bowing at the mention of Jesus name is an old practice that has since fallen into wide disuse
Msgr. Charles Pope June 10, 2018
Question: I was taught to nod my head when the name of Jesus was spoken. I see some priests and congregants do it, but not most. What is the current practice? — Diane Garrett, via email
Answer: Liturgically it is not required. This is a pious custom that, while less common today, is still observed by many. This is not only in the liturgy, but at any time the name of Jesus is uttered, and also, quite commonly, the name of Mary. In the traditional Latin Mass, where clergy wear birettas (a kind of square hat with a pom), there is the additional tipping (lifting off) of the biretta at the names of Jesus, Mary and the saint of the day. This external and very visible action also helped the faithful remember to bow their heads.
This laudable custom has sadly declined. Some clergy and others still observe it, and, while it is not required, it is worthy of being encouraged. Other customs too should not be forgotten, such as making the Sign of the Cross when passing a Catholic Church, praying the Angelus at noon and 6 p.m., and so forth. The generations raised in the 1960s and ’70s largely abandoned such practices. However, many of their children have rediscovered some of these lost customs like a precious heirloom brought down from the attic. Thus, while being careful not to harshly judge those who do not follow this non-required custom, many can joyfully take it up again and encourage others to do so.
If, as a Roman Catholic priest, you had studied the Greek, you would understand just how private of a situation this was.
27Then He said to the disciple, Behold, your mother! From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. John 19:27 NASB
Household is not in the original Greek. It has been supplied by the translators.
The word John uses in describing own is ἴδιος. It conveys the following meaning:
2398 ídios (a primitive word, NAS dictionary) properly, uniquely one's own, peculiar to the individual. 2398 /ídios ("uniquely one's own") is "stronger than the simple possessive pronoun ('own'). This emphatic adjective means 'private, personal' " (WS, 222).
He was speaking directly to John and Mary in this instance as you will recall the other disciples had abandoned Him at this point.
There is nothing in the text saying Mary was given to everyone. Nothing.
Scripture rejects this claim of Roman Catholicism.
Faith is not based on proof.
You either believe or you do not believe in the traditional preaching of Jesus Christ, His apostles and successors and His Catholic Church. Some of the traditional teachings of Jesus were written in the Bible and some were preached.
And the Word became flesh*
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Fathers only Son,
full of grace and truth.
Not the written word was made flesh. Perhaps you should reread the post that specially identified praying to saints in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are living saints in Heaven and on earth as part of the Body of Christ - His Holy Church. Reread Revelations where the saints and angels present nuggets of incense (our prayers)as they set them on fire before the Throne of God.
I realize that many do not accept or believe all of the teachings of Jesus Christ or His oral sacred tradition and have separated from Christ’s ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH.
For example, many do not accept or believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, even though clearly stated in the Bible in several passages.
May you find God’s Truth.
1:6 I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by [the] grace [of Christ] for a different gospel 7 (not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach [to you] a gospel other than the one that we preached to you, let that one be accursed! 9 As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one that you received, let that one be accursed! 10 Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.Instead of the usual statement of thankfulness, there is a strong rebuke. The Galatians have departed from the original gospel that Paul preached. Here it is important to remember that Paul's letters are not presented as a systematic catechesis; this was done orally. Rather, they were written to address specific problems to those who were already instructed in the faith. It is to been seen what was the issue that occasioned the writing of the letter to the Galatians. Vv. 8 and 9 show the gravity of changing from the original gospel message preached by Paul.
Faith is only as good as the object you place it in. You claim it comes directly from the Apostles. For such a huge claim, you should be able to demonstrate that this is true. Where is the proof? Where is the evidence?
It is not faith. It is just a hope.
You either believe or you do not believe in the traditional preaching of Jesus Christ, His apostles and successors and His Catholic Church. Some of the traditional teachings of Jesus were written in the Bible and some were preached.
Please show this was the traditional teaching before 100ad.
Please show an Apostle ever taught this or believed it.
Please show an unbroken chain of belief through every successor.
You are arguing from authority, while failing to demonstrate that the authority actually believed what you claim.
I am asking you to show exactly this - that the authority believed it.
And the Word became flesh* and made his dwelling among us,
Yes he did and you quoted Scripture to prove it. We agree that He became flesh.
Perhaps you should reread the post that specially identified praying to saints in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Not one was a departed saint. They were alive.
Again, you are putting forth authority (of Scripture, ironically) as if it is teaching what you claim. But not one example you provided showed that anyone prayed to a departed saint.
Reread Revelations where the saints and angels present nuggets of incense (our prayers)as they set them on fire before the Throne of God.
We agree it says they brought incense before the throne of God.
But the passage never says anyone prayed to one of those saints. You are adding that to Scripture.
I realize that many do not accept or believe all of the teachings of Jesus Christ or His oral sacred tradition and have separated from Christ’s ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH.
Now you are shifting to asserting things that are false. Tradition is not sacred - nor even provable. You are asserting there are "oral" teachings of Christ that we should believe, but you cannot demonstrate what they are. You are claiming the Roman Church is the 'one holy catholic and apostolic church' yet you cannot prove it. You just assert it.
Again and again, you keep showing you assert many things and can't back them up. This is peculiar.
For example, many do not accept or believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, even though clearly stated in the Bible in several passages.
It is not stated.
May you find God’s Truth.
May you find Christ Himself and salvation.
Such as?
What Paul says here is this......
Romans 4:16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring-not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
1 Corinthians 1:4-8 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledgeeven as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among youso that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
2 Corinthians 5:4-8 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdenednot that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Ephesians 1:13-14 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:13-14 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 2:13-14 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
Colossians 3:3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Galatians 2:15-21 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
Galatians 3:1-29 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vainif indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith just as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness?
Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, In you shall all the nations be blessed. So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them. Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for The righteous shall live by faith. But the law is not of faith, rather The one who does them shall live by them. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for usfor it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, And to offsprings, referring to many, but referring to one, And to your offspring, who is Christ. This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.
Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.
Is Paul contradicting himself?
Faith alone.
Period.
What’s the POINT of making the sign of the cross?
Does it show everyone how spiritual you are?
Yes, the unsaved person lives like that and the unsaved will not inherit the kingdom.
But those born again are not of the flesh but of the Spirit.
Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
And so alive in Christ.
No, God did not decide to *share Himself that way*.
He dwells in each believer through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who is given to the believer upon salvation.
Acts 17:24-25 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
2 Corinthians 6:16For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2 Timothy 4:14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
Galatians 4:4-7 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
1 Timothy 1:14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
1 John 2:27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no liejust as it has taught you, abide in him.
Praying FOR someone is not the same as praying TO some one.
And Catholics pray to saints, even when they claim they are just asking them to pray for us, they are still praying TO them to make a request of them for something.
We are to pray to God alone.
Jesus never taught anything else, nor did any other apostles.
Which does not give someone license to make stuff up and claim that Jesus taught it.
If you cannot prove that Jesus taught it and it simply wasn't written down, you have nothing but empty man-made tradition.
And word of mouth is notoriously unreliable. If that's what your depending on, then your faith is not just resting on sand, but quick sand.
Scripture never teaches that one is justfied by absolution from a priest.
All that you posted does not address the clear statement of Paul in Galatians that those who persist in sin will not inherit the kingdom of God. You cannot just pretend that Paul did not write this. And no, he is not contradicting himself because Galatians is addressing the claim that we need to be circumcised and keep the Mosaic Law. He is not claiming that we need not keep the moral law of God that predates and continues after the Law of Moses.
What’s the point of harassing Catholics and being an anti Catholic troll? Tk show everyone how superior your spirituality is?
No, you don't.
Read the Bible again:
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. (John 20:22-23)This is what the Bible says. Any attempt to remove the plain meaning of these words is placing the manmade traditions of the Protestant reforms over the words of the Bible.
Read it in Greek.
Show the whole quote:
Hence, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:1-13)The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus does what the old Law of Moses could not do, it empowers us to live free from sin. The Spirit of God dwells in us if we live according to the spirit: "For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."
