There was a 19th C Frenchman who decided to check out that old assumption. He went around to every sincle place he could find that had a relic of the cross and took measurements. It took years. When he was done, he found that all the relic material, combined together, was about enough for one cross.

Perhaps fake “true cross relics” are not nearly as ubiquitous as some might cynically assume.
