Pope Francis has responded to the death of little Alfie Evans, the disabled boy who died just days short of his 2nd birthday. Alfie died five days after a childrens hospital removed his life support without his parents consent.
The leader of the Catholic Church expressed the kind of sentiments that people around the world are expressing today. He talked about his sadness and he talked about Alfie being embraced by the Lord in heaven.
I am deeply moved by the death of little Alfie. Today I pray especially for his parents, as God the Father receives him in his tender embrace, the pope tweeted on Saturday.
Pope Francis had repeatedly spoken out on Alfies behalf and said his parents should have been able to remove him from Alder Hey Childrens Hospital to take him home or receive treatment in Italy. The head of the Catholic Church also met with Alfies Father Tom Evans at the Vatican.
In his tweet previously, Pope Francis said, Moved by the prayers and immense solidarity shown little Alfie Evans, I renew my appeal that the suffering of his parents may be heard and that their desire to seek new forms of treatment may be granted.
Previously, Pope Francis urged people worldwide to pray for Alfie as his parents continue to fight for his life.
The Pope was speaking to crowds gathered in St Peters Square on Sunday for his weekly Regina Coeli address. Alfie Evans was among the causes the Pope requested prayers for, saying: I entrust to your prayer persons such as Vincent Lambert in France, little Alfie Evans in England, and others in several countries who live, sometimes for a long time, in a state of grave illness, assisted medically for their primary needs.

Francis acknowledged the delicate, painful and complex situations surrounding these cases and asked that the sick are always treated with great respect for life with the harmonious contribution of the family, of doctors and of other health workers.
On Sunday the pontiff also prayed for Vincent Lambert, a 42-year-old Frenchman who has been disabled for 10 years. His hospital recently ordered the removal of his food and water, against the wishes of his parents and the advice of other doctors.
Before that, Pope Francis sent out a tweet supporting Alfie. He expressed his hopes on Twitter that everything necessary would be done to help the child, who suffers from a mystery brain disorder.
The Holy Father tweeted: It is my sincere hope that everything necessary may be done in order to continue compassionately accompanying little Alfie Evans, and that the deep suffering of his parents may be heard. I am praying for Alfie, for his family and for all who are involved.
My goodness how very sweet and thoughtful. I hope this photo puts Alfie’s murderers to shame, but something tells me that NOTHING can touch people who are without conscience.
You mean the murderers.
I have no doubt that the child received an injection to facilitate this ending.
He could have told the British Catholics to demonstrate in the streets and to flood their MPs with letters and e-mails. If there had been tens of thousands of people in the streets protesting against Alfies murder, the hospital would have been forced to let him go to Italy.
May be the first time Ive ever agreed with Pope Frank.

Yup....me too.
Right ?
A broKen clock is right twice a day
Now to be fair to his holiness
And again whether or not you agree with him he IS Papa
He has lived himself. A life of poverty. Not wealth
He himself washes the feet of the poor
Thanks gives him more credibility than a pope from wealth
The fact that he’s been in the slums of Rio and San Cristobal
Should allow us wordly folks to understand why the cry of socialists
“ we are for the poor!” Should sway his thinking
Mostly he is. A sincere and very humble man of God
Who is just over his head on the world stage
The fact that he made this statement about this little angel should tell you all you need to know about this guy
I like him. A lot
And I HATE socialism. To my CORE
cheers.
That’s OK. You are also descended-— in spirit anyway -— from the great English Catholic recusants and saints.
He could have told the British Catholics to protest in the streets and to flood their MPs with letters and e-mails. If there had been tens of thousands of people in the streets protesting against Alfies murder and hundreds of thousands of angry e-mails, the hospital would have been forced to let him go to Italy.
:o) You always seem to find a bright side. The Church’s history in England does go back many centuries before Henry the Fat came on the scene. Thanks for the reminder.
It does seem, though, that there's a "God Francis" and a "Bad Francis." The more you scrutinize some of his decisions, the more it makes yuou think either he's losing his mind, or you're losing yours.
I'm at the point where, when he says something that's great and wonderful, I expect to hear the opposite within 24 - 48 hours. It's.... disturbing.
And to his critics --- and they have their reasons -- I always say (Tagline)
BTTT!
This did not have to happen the way that it did. Hopefully Alfie’s parents will bring that to light in a documentary or even a movie.
From your lips to God’s ears!
Holy child of Liverpool, pray for us.
