As a young cop in a Brooklyn ghetto precinct whenever we worked Sunday day tours with a particular sgt. we knew we would be going to mass with him in a small and failing parish. It was an unspoken rule that we - about 6 young Catholic cops - would put $5.00 in the basket which was big money then. Most of the time we were more than half of those hearing mass. None of us ever complained and no one else did either. A 10 day rip is very heavy in this case so there is something else going on,- more to the story.
