Wow. Sproul is/was one of the greats, even if you don’t subscribe to Calvinism.

Last time I saw him on YouTube video participating in a panel discussion he was sitting down and on an oxygen tank, so this doesn’t totally surprise me. I remember him as being very energetic. I will miss him.

Ligonier ministries provides the Crucial Questions series in various digital formats, for free. They are a gentle introduction to Christian theology from a Reformed perspective written by R.C. Sproul.

I have the Logos version and the pdf’s.

Yep....one doesn’t have to be a Calvinist to be enriched by his teachings. He was a rare gem of a stong apologetic. He would confound atheists with his biblical wisdom

When I was thinking of becoming Presbyterian and leaving the nearly-apostate UMC, I had great concerns about Calvinism. Someone told me to listen to Sproul’s “What is Reformed Theology” series. His knowledge of the entirety of scripture convinced me.

He is definitely one of the greats who was always unapologetically Reformed in an age of weak and “culturally relevant” Christianity. He fought the good fight.

Eph 1:Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ; 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without blemish before him in love; 5 having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, 6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely bestowed favor on us in the Beloved,

Heaven is rejoicing to receive saint RC!
RC’s purpose in ministry was for people to know God, who He is and who we are. RC now sees his LORD, Coram Deo.
His recordings will comfort me in the future. I look forward to seeing RC in heaven.

the Reformed view of election leaves me unconvinced. I understand how they get to it, but my reaction is “then why not just eat, drink and be merry because you’re not the elect anyway so what the hell...”

If you think that cutting out some food, drink, and debauchery is enough to make you holy before God, then go right ahead.

I was Wesleyan and was never convinced that I could actually earn my way to heaven. One question often asked by Wesleyans is “What is the smallest sin that I can commit and be sent to Hell?” My UMC pastors would stammer and change the subject to grace, but then move back to “we need to do more”. The conflict always made me wonder.

Sproul taught me that the answer is that the smallest sin you can imagine is much bigger than the one that will send you to Hell.

Not the time or place for that discussion, IMO.
However, I will say that RC would disagree with you vehemently.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord
And may eternal Light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed,
Through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

A genius no doubt and I rejoice in his homecoming.
He believes in the Pre-Tribulation Rapture now though.
