Col. Leland Bohannon is a highly decorated officer whose career may be over
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A colonel in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) is being relieved of his command for refusing to acknowledge an airman's same-sex marriage.
On October 26, it was reported that Col. Leland Bohannon, commanding officer of a major military unit at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is being let go and will no longer be up for promotion after refusing to sign a "certificate of spouse appreciation" for a retiree's same-sex partner.
"We are hopeful that the Air Force will do the right thing, not just for Col. Bohannon but for all Airmen," said Bohannon's lawyer, Michael Berry, to Church Militant. "Commanders and Airmen at all levels deserve to know that the Air Force values their leadership and will not force them to give up their religious freedom as a condition of serving."
In May 2017, Bohannon, acting on legal advice from the USAF and his chaplain, filed for a religious exemption to opt out of signing the certificate. The exemption request, however, was returned six weeks later "without action." He opted to issue the certificate with the signature of Maj. Gen. Sami Said, a two-star general a rank significantly higher than Bohannon's and who willingly signed it.
After the retiring Master Sergeant (MSgt) learned Bohannon didn't sign the certificate for religious reasons, he submitted an Equal Opportunity (EO) complaint, alleging that Bohannon discriminated against him because of his sexual orientation.

What the hell is a “certificate of spouse appreciation”?
Our nation’s enemies are laughing at us.
The lefties are trying their damnedest to emasculate our military, and our enemies are taking notice.
This is where I expect Trump to speak up, put an end to this, and restore our religious freedom.
What the hell is a certificate of spouse appreciation?
This is tough; when Caesar signs the paychecks he calls the tune.
+1
I feel for the colonel but he must have known what the expectations of his employer have been for some time. He should have done the honorable thing and taken retirement a while ago. For the record I no longer encourage young men to enlist.
Whatever it is, the Left is apparently using it to rub in peoples’ noses.
Private sector is no better these days. Corporate compliance training, etc.
“Need not apply” should be put on their website listings.
Discrimination against Christian beliefs is okay in America according to the courts.
We don’t hear of muslims being targeted with such choices.
I actually pity those people who signed up when this country was one thing and now have to ride out x years until retirement with it drastically changed.
I’m surprised people still enlist after Vietnam - not the war itself, but how much has come out since then about how our leaders knew so early on that we had no hope of winning the war.
I agree; see # 10.
Yep and it's a shame it's come to that. I come from a three generation military family, my Grandfather fought in WWI and my father in WWII. With great regret I advised both of my children to skip the military, as service is now incompatible with our beliefs.
Thank you Bill ******* Clinton for removing Ask-Tell and letting these perverts run amuck!
I can't speak for the other services, but the 'Certificate of Spouse Appreciation' is a (nicely done) framed certificate, signed by the President and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force acknowledging the sacrifices the spouse endured throughout the career of the military member. My wife was very surprised to receive it, and it is hanging on my 'I love Me' wall, right next to my retirement certificate. I think the other services have the same thing.
In another discussion, in other testimony, in a different internal report, the Pentagon will publish data showing how much it costs to recruit and train officers that they then have trouble retaining because of wage differential with the private sector. The personnel issue has moved to a higher level of urgency given that the military just lowered enlistment standards. Here is a recent headline: “Army lifts ban on cutters, mentally ill and drug abusers to meet recruiting goals.”
It shows what the real priorities of our military are when they will trash a perfectly good officer because he knows that he cannot show approval for same-sex marriage.
We are so screwed.
It may surprise many conservatives once they discover President Trumps personal views on gay matters.
In this way, he has remained somewhat liberal.
I wouldn’t anyways, especially with literal traitors like Bergdahl, I doubt that he’s the last of his kind.
This is just so ridiculous..... We are weakening our military from the inside by these degenerates...
.....as if we didn’t see this coming.
