It was a hot day in July, a Saturday afternoon, and Kim James was bored. Her older sisters had taken her to a church event in their small hometown in Indiana, where the girls were spending their summer. Her parents were back in Bangladesh, working at the remote Baptist missionary compound where the family had lived, on and off, for five years. For an adventurous and high-spirited 13-year-old like Kim, Indiana seemed dull compared to Bangladesh. She missed her friends, the dozen or so missionary kids everybody called MKs. She missed the menagerie her parents let her keep: goats, cows, a parrot, a monkey. She missed the jackals that called in the distance at night, and the elephants that sometimes crashed through the compound fence.
As she thought about the mission, though, Kim felt troubled. Something was weighing on her mind. So she decided to skip out of the church eventit was for little kids, anywayand go see the pastor. She found him in his office, trying to compose the next days sermon. Kim ambled around his desk, picking things up, putting them back down. Eventually, with feigned casualness, she pointed between her legs and said, Is it wrong when someone does thistouches you here?
The pastor dropped his pen and looked up. Kim, he asked, has this happened to you?
At first, Kim said no. But as the pastor gently persisted, she began to sob. Yes, she had been touched, there and there, lots of times.
The pastor asked Kim who had touched her.
Uncle Donn, she said.

I always turn to Marxist rags like the New Republic for objectivity and perspective.
I’ll just ask that you practice ecumenism in your reporting irregularities, scandals and crime in churches. As it stands, you’re oddly fascinated only by Protestants in this regard, which is somewhat puzzling seeing as how you’re Catholic. Or, maybe you’re just merely attempting to proselytize in a backhanded manner? I hope that’s not the case.
That’s why I said: “What about Scouting? Theyre safe from accusations, for now . . .” Kids are at higher risk because of the perverts on the Ctrl-Left twisting what used to be one of the best organizations in America. But BSA is less likely to have news coverage of those predators because it would not help the pervert narrative.
OK, so given the scope and scale of priests sexually abusing young boys in this country over the past, what, half century at least, you can name two who weren’t secreted out of the country?
“Are Protestants concealing a Catholic-size sexual abuse scandal?”
No.
1. No Protestant church is as big as the Catholic (RCC) church.
2. Protestant churches do not have the same concentration of power that the RCC has.
3. Protestant churches typically have local church power vested in several committees which prevents cover-ups and scandals on the scale of what has been seen with the RCC.
Catholic priests are not any worse than ministers -school teachers etc etc
Child molesters always go where the kids are. Especially in places of authority.
Do you always attack the source of information rather than the content of the information itself too?
School teacher are certainly running to catch up with them no doubt about it. Can’t understand why they would want to. People are just evil anymore.
That is an unfair statement as I’ve posted sex abuse in Jewish and Muslim communities as well.
This week it’s this case that is finally coming to a close or so it would seem. This doctor abused a lot of kids overseas and it got covered up. Sound like you’ve heard this before? Why are you making it a Catholic or Protestant thing and not what it is? A criminal issue?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again I don’t care what religion you are in if your kid is sexually abused you call the police and report it. Then find another church/parish if you have to. What was done to the child in this story makes my blood boil why it does not yours I don’t know. If she tells everyone in that church to “go to hell” I won’t blame her they deserve it.
No one and I mean no one should use religion no matter if it’s protestant or Catholic to cover up sex abuse.
What a horrific story and all the worse as those involved KNEW better.
Absolutly inexcusable and those who knew what was going on did not take action need to be prosecuted as well.
The situation should have been investigated and dealt with on the very first allegation.
He WILL pay for this someday when he faces God.
In the meantime, I am glad he’s going to prison for it. It’s not nearly what he deserves for what he did, but it’s a start and I am glad they aren’t giving him leniency because of his age.
Well, my apologies then, I stand corrected. Have you overlooked anyone?
Thank you for understanding. I feel so bad for that girl.
You find me a case of Buddist or Hindus sexually abusing kids and I will post that too. Does not matter the religion. Odds are the parents were stupid and did not go to the police first and went to the religions elders and a cover up occurred.
OK, so you’ve got your Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus covered. good. This sort of abuse should have a light shone upon it, it’s particularly heinous coming from houses of God or purported ones.
But, have you overlooked anyone?
Here, per your request, are two who aren't:
Thank you I knew one was murdered in prison but could not remember who.
I would not say stupid.
Naive, perhaps, but not stupid.
And being out of the country, makes it a bit harder to go to the police before the religious authorities.
And actually, they took the appropriate Scriptural action. Take it to the church leaders. THAT"S where the ball got dropped and if you read the article again, they were stymied by those very same officials.
