There is only ONE place in Scripture where the words "faith alone" appear together in Scripture:
"You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone." James 2:24
Please don’t upset people with strict Biblical views by quoting the Bible to them.
Try reading Romans 4 where Paul talks about Abraham.
You don’t know the Bible OR Koine Greek very well, do you?
If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments. (Matt. 19:17)
But of course there are those who would have you believe that they know more than Jesus.
We are justified by works. Just not ours. We are justified by the completed work of Christ and nothing else.
Funny how all of they have of what Jesus said is contained in the Bible, but they make it a point to ignore so much that contradicts their man-made doctrines.
But THAT'S supposed to be "common sense."
By all means! Refute him with your Koine Greek and Bible knowledge; don't just act like a little brat by acting like your insult is an answer.
You just can't cherry-pick the verses that support beliefs. You cannot ignore James.
"not by faith alone" is the only verse in Scripture where 'faith alone' is found. You can point to a hundred verses on the importance of faith. Yes. Faith is important. Faith Alone is counter to the plain words of Scripture.
Since when is a direct quote “interpretive?”
Implied “bastardization” is useless in the hands of observable intellectual dishonest.
The “works” that the Apostle James is describing are works that demonstrate your faith. Jesus tells us to believe in Him, and follow His commandments. Jesus refers to following his commandments as “bearing fruit”. Note: only the seed (Word) sown in “good ground” bears fruit.
Many “Christians” miss the “follow His commandments” part. His general commandment is to “Love another!” There are also specific commandments that Jesus gives to specific people at specific times.
It is really hard to understand how promoting “sola fide”, and ignoring the “works” which demonstrate that faith, is actually in keeping with what Jesus taught.
I’m not going to argue with you because you clearly know more than we do.
I will, however, point out the word “trinity” isn’t in the Bible either, but it’s clearly taught implicitly, much as “sola fide.”
I’ll post the following link for anyone else who isn’t certain he understands the gospel.
You know, I would, but whenever I have before I just got told I was going to Hell by the Papists.
So rather, I will simply snark back in the nasty way that the Papists love so much. That’s how they started, that’s how I’ll reply.
If they wanted dialogue, they wouldn’t be so condescending, would they?
The whole point is that you cannot be saved by works.
Faith generates and begins the “good work in Christ”.
It follows suit. And it’s not cherry picking.
What kind of works are required for Salvation?
Christ says none.
John 3:36
John 6:29
Romans 10:9-10
Acts 16:31
Faith was enough to count Abraham and Lot as righteous per Romans 4.
But that is not what Scripture says.
"You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone." James 2:24
When it’s cherry picked out of context of course.
How about the article’s point on the ENTIRE book of Galatians.
Consider Abraham: He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: All nations will be blessed through you. So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law. Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, The righteous will live by faith (Galatians 3:6-11).
There is no “good news” except justification before God by faith alone. Real faith results in good works...which is the whole point of the book of James. “Results in” however, is not the same as “combined with.”
I agree completely.
But Scripture says we cannot be saved by Faith Alone.
