I was taught the same thing but I came to realize through studying Scripture that we aren't saved because we live "Godly" lives, behave or do good works. God's word says it is because of His grace and mercy that we are saved THROUGH faith. We could never be good enough or behave enough to merit heaven. That's why Jesus died on the cross for our sins - by His shed blood, atonement is made for our souls. Because God imputes Christ's righteousness to us when we receive Him by faith, we are saved. He goes further and tells us we shall NEVER perish, be plucked from His hands, He will never lose us or cast us out.
Should we behave and live Godly lives? Of course! He didn't save us so we could be little hellions on earth and bring shame upon His holy name. That's why He gives the Holy Spirit to indwell us so that we even have the desire to be holy as HE is holy. But we are not saved by our works, it is the gift of God.
True; but we ARE taught; in WAY too many venues; that..
... we are KEPT because we live "Godly" lives, behave or do good works.
