Do you remember being a kid and attempting to debate grown up topics with friends? I remember from my youth having a friend whose father was an atheist. After hearing frequently his father mock and criticize theists and religious people, my young friend became rather indoctrinated. By the age of 10, he could take up the arguments hed heard a million times around the home and challenge classmates and children in the neighborhood. To be that young and such a cynic seems awfully sad now as I look back. In retrospect I suppose my childhood pal figured if he could convince us of his fathers arguments, he could convince himself. Growing up in the 1970s, it was not like atheists were unheard of. At that time in the western United States it was beginning to become acceptable and even popular among some circles to profess an atheistic world view.

From the article: “This story is a clear example that that the search for proof often interferes with the realization of truth. My friends father was not going to let the truth of the big bang interfere with his need for proof that God didnt exist.”
Often times, we don’t think and reason out a situation, instead we rely on our usual thought processes.
I was taught to look at problems, and then list options:
For example, How many ways to travel to Chicago:
1. By air.
2. By auto
3. By boat
4. By horse
5. By walking
6. etc.
By examining the options, we challenge how we think to consider other options. We all need to challenge how we think so that we understand other ways/ options.
I agree with what you were taught.
However, it is nearly impossible to reason someone out of something they were not reasoned into.
I learned a long time ago, when i was in the military, “Don’t say it, unless you can back it up.”
Absolutely. Another one I was taught. “Go ahead and think about why you can’t. Then get down to the business of thinking why you can.”
You are right. You can’t force someone to think or consider other options. Some are just stuck and can’t figure it out.
I know many like that.
Can you imagine how God feels that he showed us the path to eternal life, and many with their acts of free will just ignore and can’t comprehend the Truth?
