The 'Sons of God' in Genesis were NOT in flesh bodies. They are those that the book of Jude describes. (Also referred to in other places, called 'fallen angels') A 'sign' that Christ said would be, was that it would be again as in the 'days of Noe (Noah). We have not reach that tipping point.
Eve was the literal linage to Christ, and that is why Eve was called the mother of the 'living'... Paul warned of the same 'spirit' of deception falling upon the church as was done to Eve... It does NOT elevate Mary to ignore Eve, as per what The Creator instructed Moses, the first prophet/writer to pen.

Why would a man of such stature who calls himself a Christian do such a thing?

If Satan is part of Gods plan, then the God of the Bible is a bad god and shouldn’t be worshiped or loved. This is what the Hebrews and later Jews adopted from Persia when they were taken by Nebuchadnezzar. The main religion of Persia at the time was Zoroastrianism and taught about the dualism of Good verses Evil. The good was Ahura Mazda and the evil was Angra Mainyu.

There are some easy ways to tell if someone or something are good or bad. Use the Seven Deadly Sins as your guide.
Vanity, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, and Envy.
Vanity is the cardinal sin, the sin of Lucifer. It is to imagine oneself in the role of God. It is also the most common and easiest trap to fall into. Even the current Pope has fallen into this trap, imagining that socialists must be righteous, even though they are motivated by vanity to imagine themselves as God, because they claim the same goals as the righteous. But the ends of socialism are always awful, harming many innocents along the way.
If someone is motivated by one or more of these sins, or if a goal involves one or more of these sins, odds are that theirs is not a path to success, but more likely harmful failure. They may seem to succeed for a while, but they pay a high price, even on Earth.
