Alexandria, La., Sep 21, 2016 / 11:46 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican announced Wednesday that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop David Prescott Talley, currently auxiliary bishop of Atlanta and a former Baptist, to serve as the coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria.
As coadjutor, Bishop Talley possesses the right of succession as head of the Diocese of Alexandria upon the resignation of its current ordinary, Bishop Ronald Herzog. Bishop Herzog will celebrate his 75th birthday 'mandatory retirement' age for bishops on April 22, 2017.
Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta said Sept. 21 that Bishop Talley is a servant minister of our Church, who is graced with extraordinary wisdom, patience, kindness and dedication.
The bishop, he said, developed these gifts as a priest and bishop here in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, where he always cared for our people as a true minister of mercy and kindness. Thus, he now begins this new appointment with exceptional credentials.
Serving as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Atlanta since 2012, Bishop Talley, 66, was the first native-born Georgian to serve the Archdiocese of Atlanta as a bishop.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, Sept. 11, 1950, he was raised as a Southern Baptist, but left that ecclesial community as a teenager over the issue of racial segregation, he said. He then joined the Catholic Church when he was 24, after meeting Catholics and reading the writings of Thomas Merton while he was studying at Auburn University.
He was ordained a priest of the Atlanta archdiocese June 3, 1989, and earned a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He has served as pastor at three Atlanta area parishes, as the archdiocesan vocations director, as chancellor of the archdiocese, and as judicial vicar of the metropolitan tribunal. He was made a........

None. Cthulhu will rise from the sea and displace all other contenders for rule, when he is ready.
I’m joking, but on the other hand, do we have a worldwide wave of madness, or what?
This is the kind of spiritual loop in which people who have truly been born again will find themselves in sooner or later. Passing on the blessings of God to those who truly need it, and raising a witness to the glory of God.
I don’t know a thing about the specific congregational background he had been in before — but I’ve been in a few Protestant places that seem to have forgotten altogether why they are protesting. Dry and doctrinaire, without any spiritual nourishment in sight. One of the worst called itself, yes, Baptist.
Oh, good summary! With varying details, we could say this about myriads of Christians, past and present.
Do I bless others, and glorify God, by caring for the handicapped, the elderly, the dying, children, the mentally ill ... or by writing, teaching, singing, composing, painting ... or by showing how the holy ones of God do accounting, engineering, farming, road-building, chemistry, or auto mechanics?
What a big old world it is, and how many opportunities its Creator gives us!

Nevertheless, some of his ideas are dangerous. His later writings (see "Read with Caution," page 9) are more confusing than helpful, for they conflate and confuse Buddhist and Christian teachings. One example of that confusion is seen in a popular icon sold in many Christian and Buddhist stores that depicts him sitting in the lotus posture in Zen meditation. The night before his death, Merton told John Moffitt that,
"Zen and Christianity are the future."
This is precisely what the Holy Father has expressed grave concerns about.
It sure doesn't sound like Merton was the best mentor for the catholic.
You never confuse where Paul is on the issue of Christianity. Hopefully the new bishop has read some of Paul's writings.
I think that story worked as well as it did because it was parallel to a religious account that we already know and understand.
Anyhow, when God rises up, the devil doesn’t just sit there and give Him golf applause. There’s a WAR on.
Maybe you think you are joking but it fits in with Bible prophecy that the anti-christ is empowered by Satan.
I think your tagline is dead on.
And we may dodge the bullet if Trump becomes president, but some day Bible prophecy will be fulfilled. It always is.
And some generation will be the one to see it and no one wants to be part of that generation.
Merton is a mixed bag, as is C. S. Lewis and many other influential (but not formally inspired) Christian authors.
There are myriads of ministry milieus. If we have Jesus in our soul, we will want to let the Lion of Judah out of his cage. Opportunities to explain will arise as prayed for and granted by the Lord.
Well, we all undergo trials, some severe, some less so.
It seems a lot to me that when Jesus asked whether He would find faith in those days, He was hinting that the answer was no. This is going to be a worldful of unbelievers that will never look to God for help no matter how much the devil yanks them around. A hell on earth will result.
I think Satan is much more of a familiar figure - a person of pure intellect and will, like all the angels - than the alien Ancient Ones of Lovecraft’s imagination. Satan knows God, and knows us, and even knows the Lord Jesus ... in a way, but wrongly. Cthulhu is more like an avalanche than like a fallen angel.
In My Opinion!
I do think that no election can avert what’s coming to a nation who kills unborn children, the handicapped, the elderly, and the ill as we do. I absolutely believe that Trump is better than Hillary by an order of magnitude, but compared to the toll of suffering and death from our current ideology ... well, if what we deserve hits in my lifetime, I’m resigned.
Yep, what you said!
I’ve seen some things that might, like it did Merton, cause one to wonder “outside the box.”
I’ve seen Hindus that seem closer to God than some avowed Christians I have met. Perhaps Merton did not mean that Zen of itself was salvational, but that it could be a milieu in which Christ could approach people anonymously, of course sooner or later to reveal Himself outright.
Missionaries have often reported stories of such revelations occurring to the peoples they have purposed to witness to, sometimes even foretelling the arrival of the missionaries themselves!
We can’t box up Christ inside a church building. He arranges to witness of Himself as He sees fit, and that isn’t necessarily how doctrinally correct Christians might formulate it.
Well, the election that will avert such ills won’t be a political election. It will be the acceptance of Christ by people that Christ already knew would accept Him, in an arrangement that is far too wonderful for mortals like me to understand.
When I see abortion, I see hard heartedness written in the blood of those who may not have done anything to deserve it (I say may not, because we do not know about the activity of the souls of fallen men with respect to conception — legally the baby is innocent, but spiritually it too has participated in the fall of man which has taken it into the sphere of sin).
Only Jesus will soften those hearts. All the threats of a miserable future that we could muster in this world, cannot of themselves do it. At best they can only set a stage for a separate revelation. I can say from experience and from coming within a hair of it myself, that people who go to hell want to be there, to be with the devil they adore. Nothing can solve that problem but a frankly salvational entity with a love that is staggering.
I agree! (and now, good night!)
What inflammatory headline ? Rather, it is a factual headline that denigrates no one.
This denomination taunted that one, and ad infinitum. And we wonder, where’s Christ in this mess. Well, wherever He is, He isn’t in the taunting!
The guy's a full fledged Catholic and HAS been for 40 some years.
The headline is inflammatory.
No, the headline is factual. He was raised in the SBC, left as a teen and, years later, decided to be Catholic.
“In My Opinion!”
Not good enough, sorry. This is the internet.
“I do think that no election can avert whats coming to a nation who kills unborn children, the handicapped, the elderly, and the ill as we do.”
Cthulhu was the first to speak out against killing the most innocent and helpless without also killing all the wicked and powerful. A Cthulhu presidency will ensure ALL will die writhing in madness and pain. The Elder Party has always been an equal opportunity destroyer.
