Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky Prays “The Hail Mary” Before Every Race
uCatholic ^ | August 8, 2016

Posted on 08/08/2016 2:14:55 PM PDT by NYer

U.S. Olympian Katie Ledecky is the world record holder in the 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyles, and the American record holder in the 500-, 1000- and 1650-yard freestyles.

In the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she will compete in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter freestyle. She has won Gold medals in the 2012 London Olympics and again in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

But before every race Ledecky, a faithful Catholic, offers a Hail Mary. “I do say a prayer – or two – before any race. The Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer and I find that it calms me.” she said.

In an interview with the Catholic Standard Ledecky said “My Catholic faith is very important to me. It always has been and it always will be. It is part of who I am and I feel comfortable practicing my faith. It helps me put things in perspective.”

Bogus.

You didn’t find a single verse to support this pagan belief.

“Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and MediatriX”

Not a single one of those is a title gave dear Mary. You guys have created a demigoddess.

Wasn’t God’s declaration of Mary enough? It was enough for God and for Mary.

>>Some Catholic writings even push the position that if Christ isn't answering your prayer go to Mary to it answered.<<

Catholics advocating this position are not even in the ballpark.

Go with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Yeah.

It had the largest voting block.

"Rome has made it [Last Supper] into a ritual performed everytime something happens in church."

Catholics reading this thread --- if any have hung on this far --- are rolling their eyes. Anyone with a single day's experience within an actual Catholic parish knows how goofy this statement is.

You and I --- we're friends, Elsie. But I do want you to know that when you (and other non-Catholics) make these screwball pronouncements about the Catholic Church as if they were "facts", when they could be disproved instantly by anybody with a weekly bulletin in their hands, it just makes you look --- well, wacky. Sorry.

Are not those Catholic bishops who approved the writing not under church authority? If “”tradition” has been handed down as Catholics claim why are the writings Mary not to be on par with that of the ccc?

Not sure which bishops or what writing you have in mind. But in general, it can be said that yes, Catholic bishops are under the authority of the Catholic Church. They are entrusted with approving writings that are related to Catholic doctrine, but that approval must be predicated on the writings being in accord with Catholic doctrine. And as I mentioned, the CCC is the repository of Catholic doctrine, containing divine truth as revealed in Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Traditon. Sometimes, bishops get it wrong; that is why their decisions are not on a par with the CCC.

Revelation 8:4 is the verse, along with the verses around it, which give a great example of intercessory prayer and prayers of saints.

He saved her from all sin (Luke 1:28, 47).

If you mean in the sense Mary believed in God, then yes, she was saved from her sins as are Christians who believe in Christ are saved from our sins.

Again, you can use your spin or accept that the Blessed Mother was very special and chosen by God as the the Mother of God and was without sin. A role model for all of us. Luke does say “all sin”.

You and I --- we're friends, Elsie.

I like to think so as well.

And I am your wacky friend.

But; you've not addressed the fact(?) that I posted about the Eucharist.

Do you, or do you not, perform this ritual every time in church?

Please enlighten any NON-Catholics that have hung on this far; me included.

Are not those Catholic bishops who approved the writing not under church authority?

What does the data suggest??

As regards the oft-quoted Mt. 16:18, note the following bishops promise in the profession of faith of Vatican 1:

 • Basil of Seleucia, Oratio 25:

'You are Christ, Son of the living God.'...Now Christ called this confession a rock, and he named the one who confessed it 'Peter,' perceiving the appellation which was suitable to the author of this confession. For this is the solemn rock of religion, this the basis of salvation, this the wall of faith and the foundation of truth: 'For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus.' To whom be glory and power forever. — Oratio XXV.4, M.P.G., Vol. 85, Col. 296-297.

Bede, Matthaei Evangelium Expositio, 3:

You are Peter and on this rock from which you have taken your name, that is, on myself, I will build my Church, upon that perfection of faith which you confessed I will build my Church by whose society of confession should anyone deviate although in himself he seems to do great things he does not belong to the building of my Church...Metaphorically it is said to him on this rock, that is, the Saviour which you confessed, the Church is to be built, who granted participation to the faithful confessor of his name. — 80Homily 23, M.P.L., Vol. 94, Col. 260. Cited by Karlfried Froehlich, Formen, Footnote #204, p. 156 [unable to verify by me].

• Cassiodorus, Psalm 45.5:

'It will not be moved' is said about the Church to which alone that promise has been given: 'You are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.' For the Church cannot be moved because it is known to have been founded on that most solid rock, namely, Christ the Lord. — Expositions in the Psalms, Volume 1; Volume 51, Psalm 45.5, p. 455

Chrysostom (John) [who affirmed Peter was a rock, but here not the rock in Mt. 16:18]:

Therefore He added this, 'And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; that is, on the faith of his confession. — Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Homily LIIl; Philip Schaff, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf110.iii.LII.html)

Cyril of Alexandria:

When [Peter] wisely and blamelessly confessed his faith to Jesus saying, 'You are Christ, Son of the living God,' Jesus said to divine Peter: 'You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church.' Now by the word 'rock', Jesus indicated, I think, the immoveable faith of the disciple.”. — Cyril Commentary on Isaiah 4.2.

Origen, Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew (Book XII):

“For a rock is every disciple of Christ of whom those drank who drank of the spiritual rock which followed them, 1 Corinthians 10:4 and upon every such rock is built every word of the church, and the polity in accordance with it; for in each of the perfect, who have the combination of words and deeds and thoughts which fill up the blessedness, is the church built by God.'

“For all bear the surname ‘rock’ who are the imitators of Christ, that is, of the spiritual rock which followed those who are being saved, that they may drink from it the spiritual draught. But these bear the surname of rock just as Christ does. But also as members of Christ deriving their surname from Him they are called Christians, and from the rock, Peters.” — Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew (Book XII), sect. 10,11 ( http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101612.htm)

Hilary of Potier, On the Trinity (Book II): Thus our one immovable foundation, our one blissful rock of faith, is the confession from Peter's mouth, Thou art the Son of the living God. On it we can base an answer to every objection with which perverted ingenuity or embittered treachery may assail the truth."-- (Hilary of Potier, On the Trinity (Book II), para 23; Philip Schaff, editor, The Nicene & Post Nicene Fathers Series 2, Vol 9.

Revelation 8:4 is the verse, along with the verses around it, which give a great example of intercessory prayer and prayers of saints.

Revelation 8

New International Version (NIV)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.

Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

So, angels talk with their hands?

I must be missing something...

Again, you can use your churches teaching that the Mother of Jesus was without sin; or you can realize that there was a PROSTITUTE in the lineage of Jesus.

There is NOTHING in the book that Rome assembled that even SUGGESTS that Mary was without sin.
