U.S. Olympian Katie Ledecky is the world record holder in the 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyles, and the American record holder in the 500-, 1000- and 1650-yard freestyles.
In the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she will compete in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter freestyle. She has won Gold medals in the 2012 London Olympics and again in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
But before every race Ledecky, a faithful Catholic, offers a Hail Mary. I do say a prayer or two before any race. The Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer and I find that it calms me. she said.
In an interview with the Catholic Standard Ledecky said My Catholic faith is very important to me. It always has been and it always will be. It is part of who I am and I feel comfortable practicing my faith. It helps me put things in perspective.
Catholic ping!
That’s not going to go over well... she doesn’t even wear a hijab and she’s talking about religion ?????
Only one olympian is allowed to do that...
The media’s really gone turn on her now.
Carry on, Miss Ledecky
Congratulations to Ledecky!
She’s not the Chosen Muslim, so the Mediascum does not want to hear about this. They won’t be asking why she didn’t get to carry the flag for the USA....
What a beautiful smile! She looks so happy!
Isn’t it normally called Praying the Rosary? A “Hail Mary” is a last gasp effort to try and snatch victory from certain defeat. I doubt this young champion was in that position.
Whatever happened to praying to God?
The rosary involves a particular sequence and quantity of the Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be, etc. The prayer is indeed known as “the Hail Mary” in English. Latin: Ave Maria.
Thank you. I’m not a Catholic but grew up in a mostly Catholic area. When visiting friends’ homes I got taken along to many a mass on Saturday evenings. I have a lot of respect for the traditions of the “Mother Church” and am always interested to learn more.
17 year Catholic school vet here. Love it!! Missy Franklin is also a product of Catholic school.
You do not know what you are saying.
You may be confusing football with religion.

Catholics pray to the Saints who are indeed alive in Heaven. God hears our prayers coupled with the prayers of the Saints. Check the book of Revelation for one of many, many cases in the bible of intercessory prayer and Saints praying.
Not in Scripture to ever pray to Mary or any other departed believer.
Not in Scripture that any departed believer can hear your prayer to them.
Not in Scripture that any departed believer can answer or influence a prayer.
Still, if it helps her win and excel at bringing home medals, ok then!
