The top policy body for the United Methodist Church is struggling to avert a split over gay rights.
The Methodist General Conference voted 428-405 to delay all discussion of church policy related to LGBT people during a meeting in Portland, Oregon. Delegates created a commission Wednesday to review all relevant church law on the subject over a period of at least two years, then hold a special meeting to discuss the way forward.

Refusing to deal with it is not helping the situation. The denomination needs to cut out the dead wood. If that is seen as a split so be it. Light has no business harboring darkness....
My certainty is called “faith”.
Nothing says you have to have it, too.
Sounds like the **** has already hit the fan.
WHAT a shame. All people have to do is follow God's plan. We have the Bible, Apostolic Tradition and the Papacy to interpret "newer" things like...abortion being a sin. How can ANY Christian justify abortion?
The UMC long ago surrendered in practice regarding this matter. That their mostly elder congregation did not realize that the church had been altered/infiltrated/revolutionized was clear.
It is over for the UMC. They did not take a stand regarding lesbians in leadership positions so that is now all that exists. Look at who heads up any small or rural church—it is obvious.
At the national level, the church is all communist and nwo on all matters.
No wonder they are a rapidly fading organization.
I have my certainty of faith too...from the Bible, Apostolic Tradition and the Papacy (which rules on "newer" conundrums such as legalized abortion). Also, ancient times didn't have the "newer" sins like speeding, taking illegal drugs, drunken driving, etc.).
Jesus summed it up: Love God and love each other.
Did I mention that I love you, sisterMeganC?
Bwaaahahah. :o)
The United Methodists have become the Untied Methodists.
I grew up United Methodist, but left about 30 years ago and eventually found myself in the Orthodox Church. Things have been unraveling in the UMC for decades. There are people and clergy who have remained fathful to traditional Christianity, and there are others who could not abandon it fast enough. Unfortunately, the latter have dominated national leadership roles, seminary faculty, etc., for some time. I guess they figured the cultural climate was right this year to make a big push on the homosexual issue.
What would Jesus say?
Men shalt no go into women’s bathrooms!
Why are they tring to avoid church? And why is gayz rightz important to this group?
I’ve been a UMC member all my life. If they change the policy on gay weddings or clergy, my family will have to find a new denomination.... probably Wesleyan.

They have two years to mix the Kool-aid.

You are so fortunate to have access to an Orthodox Church. The closest one to me is around 80 miles. I was raised Baptist & would never go back. My Mother turned Pentecostal & I hate it. All emotion, no substance.
I am drawn to the Orthodox Church because it’s ancient & the worship is incredibly beautiful & reverent. I only wish that the Orthodox Church had more prayer & worship apps to download, like the Catholics have.
Time is not on their side. This is telling - of the 864 delegates at the conference, 30% are from Africa. Those 30% are conservative and the African share of delegates will only increase in the future.
This is the Waterloo of the progressives and they have retreated.
The split will eventually occur. It has just been delayed.
FYI. Did you see this coming?
My take is that the eventual has just been forestalled.
A visitor from the future appeared to a minister of a Main Line Church.
VISITOR: I can tell you anything about the future.
MINISTER: What will become of the Main Line Denominations?
VISITOR: I have good news and bad news. The good news is that all denominational walls will come down. In the future, the UMC, the UCC, PCUSA and all the others will be one church.
MINISTER: That’s wonderful! What’s the bad news?
VISITOR: That one church will be on 54 Main Street in...
Thanks for the ping.
Satan is taking a tire iron to the churches. This is why I can’t join a church.
Last year we found a church we liked. It was a Missouri Synod Lutheran church. Seemed normal. It was nice having communion.
Then at Christmas, the associate pastor held the service.
He announced during his sermon that miracles were over after the “apostle age.” He explained that he had never seen a miracle. We left and never looked back.
It definitely has been the home I was looking for. Some good online resources are the Orthodox Christian Network, Ancient Faith Radio, and the Online Chapel of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. I know there is an app for Ancient Faith Radio.
Where I live, there are plenty of the ethnic groups that brought Orthodoxy with them. If you have the opportunity to make that 80-mile trip sometimes, I encourage you to do so., especially during the holidays.
