Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Paul
(Paul's First Letter to Timothy)
2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostleI am telling the truth, I am not lyingand a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.
8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearingif they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Throughout this study of Paul's Character, I have cited many a Scripture Passage and said "This is one of my FAVORITE Scriptures!!!" I have to admit, though, that I have a bit of a struggle with this one.
The people in our government have disappointed me over and over again. I am not just speaking about the current administration (although, it's the WORST!), but more about those we trusted to turn things around, to listen to the will of those who put them in power, and to help restore the Constitution as it was intended by our Founding Fathers.
I feel deceived and betrayed. It is not a good feeling. Then I remember that Paul was much more deceived and betrayed by his government than I ever have been. As a Citizen, he appealed to Caesar for justice in his struggle with the "Authorities" back in the "Provinces". As a result of his quest for justice, Paul was shipped, chained, in a boat to Rome, shipwrecked along the way, and changed ships a number of times under guard, only to arrive in Rome only to be slapped into prison yet again. There is no record of Paul ever getting to present his case to Caesar, and indeed, extra-Biblical writings and tradition declare that Paul was eventually beheaded for his trouble. Yet, he tells us to pray for those in authority. If Paul could do it, I guess I can too.
Then we have the "Church Ladies". This seems to contradict other writings of Paul, where he commends numerous women for their ministries of hospitality, teaching, and having a church in their home. He calls many of them "Fellow Workers in the Faith", and one Lady, in particular, a certain Junia, as a Fellow Apostle! How can this be?
One explanation could be that the women to whom Paul was referring to in both the Corinthian Church and Timothy's congregation were so elated with their new-found freedom in Christ that they became overbearing and obnoxious. Just as Eve tempted her husband to sin, these women were really messing things up for the church. Having been in ministry myself for 35 years, I know EXACTLY what Paul is talking about, and many comedians have used the prototype of a bossy, self-righteous "Church Lady" to great effect. (Not only Dana Carvey, but "Aunt Esther", and a number of others.)
Oh, and by the way, I am a woman! And I hope and pray I NEVER come across that way. EEK!

Indeed, many see Paul as a woman hater, but a closer look shows no such thing.
Joining in prayer, left that other site, for Israel, our beloved America, and all God’s people.
And may the Good Lord overrule the ungodly leaders in our land.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!
|
_ |
EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. |
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
