Pope Francis has called on Catholic leaders to seek a ban on the death penalty exclaiming that 'Thou shall not kill applies to the guilty as well as the innocent'.
Speaking to thousands at St. Peter's Square, in the Vatican, the Pontiff asked politicians around the world to make 'a courageous and exemplary gesture' during the Church's current Holy Year.
He said: 'I appeal to the consciences of those who govern to reach an international consensus to abolish the death penalty...

Lighten up Francis. You’ve never been elected to any position in America. Go spread that crap in your own country.
I just read a short story in a car magazine. Car and Driver I think.
Anyway it said the Pope when he visited America, declined the Secret Service limo and rode in an economy car. Of course they flew the car from Italy in it’s own 747.
Disband the Swiss Guard.
Hey, anti-Pope, the correct translation is basically “Thou Shalt Not Murder.” That’s a whole different thing.
Maybe read some of Saint Thomas Aquinas’ writings, ya dolt.
Exactly. The original scripture says, “Thou shall not murder.” Big difference.
I believe the proper translation is not “thou shall not kill”, but rather “thou shall not murder”.....there is a vast distinction.
How can any Pope not know the commandment is “Thou shalt not murder?”
The implications are even worse if he DOES know.
Just wow. :(
This Pope is such an embarrassment. Like Obama, he is capable of doing a lot of damage in a short period of time.
Didn’t God order the Israelites to completely wipe out certain people groups, down to the last man, woman and child and animal? I think Israel failed to do this, on several occasions, and it always led to problems.
The statement by the Pope that ‘Thou shalt not kill’ applies to the guilty as well as the innocent’ again displays his appalling and willful ignorance of Christian theology. He has substituted a personal moral conviction sourced in human reasoning, but one requiring backwards engineering of selected scripture translations through cherished homilies to arrive at his preordained point of departure. In my opinion he first of all treasures acceptance within the larger social and academic humanistic community by allowing others to write his definitions and set his agendas.
Quoting âThou shalt not killâ simply does not work. There are two Greek words: the ordinary word to kill and the word to murder. The scriptures use the word for murder one in Gospel accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. To examine the Old Testament one can complete a fairly thorough analysis just by reviewing Strongâs Concordance. The commandment âThou shalt not killâ uses the word ratsach, which by my count appears 33 times in the Old Testament, and always refers to what our civil courts would interpret as committing first and second degree murder. I find two others words for kill and slay, muwth and harag, and three for destroy, shamad, shachath, and charam. These appear over 230 times and encompass all accounts for application of justice and conduct of warfare.
I contrast his position with that of C. S. Lewis, who experienced two world wars and a depression during his distinguished academic career. In terms of pure intelligence few surpassed him. After serving in the trenches and being crippled during WW I, Lewis entered Oxford as an undergraduate student, where he won a triple first; the highest honors in three areas of study. Such was the beginning of an outstanding career. As a Christian few have surpassed him for accurately tempering a superior intellect with the wondrous mystery of the Lordâs existence as absolute righteousness and absolute love resulting in perfect justice.
The quote I remember comes from Mere Christianity and says, âDoes loving your enemy mean not punishing him? No, for loving myself does not mean that I ought not to subject myself to punishment â even to death. If one has committed a murder, the right Christian thing to do would be to give yourself up to the bench and be hanged. It is, therefore, in my opinion, perfectly right for a Christian judge to sentence a man to death or a Christian solder to kill an enemy.â¦â¦We may kill if necessary, but we must not hate or enjoy it.â
When faced with the liberal church represented by individuals such as the Pope who possesses a fledging intellect and life experiences, I would always choose to take my council from people like C. S. Lewis. Lewis expressed a durable morality earned in the ultimate bloody deluges and the great economic tragedy of the 20th century.
Roger that!
“Thou Shalt Not Murder”...as in kill for theft, lust, revenge, or greed. You kill to protect yourself if threatened with bodily harm.
This man isn’t fit to clean Pope John Paul II’s shoes, let alone follow in his footsteps.
Yes, 1 Samuel 15 is one example.
He could be a bouncer at the club though.
Learned his chops in Argentina, just make it up as you go.
Exactly. The point being, many people were to be wiped out, but it wasn't murder.
‘Thou shalt not kill’ applies to the guilty as well as the innocent’
What nonsense ! All killing isn’t murder anymore than all sex is adultery.
Instead of ISIS targeting this Pope, he is becoming so ridiculous that they won’t even bother.
I am not Catholic. But I do oppose the death penalty. Personal beliefs and punishment requirements in my mind do not allow me to judge someone to death. But believe me you will not like my alternatives to the death penalty.
Flame away.
The Commandment in Hebrew reads murder, not kill.
More leaven from the pharisees.
Being hung on a cross worked out for mankind...
