This shows how ignorant you are. Liturgy IS the reason! The sacraments are the reason.
Also, what ‘finery’? What ‘gold’? Most priests wear ready-made polyester chasubles purchased at a religious supply store for less than $200.
If you mean the pope, he does not wear ‘gold’ or precious jewels except for his ring, and this pope’s is plain silver.
Your “curious” questions are so full of wrong assumptions it’s impossible to give you an answer in this format. This has a history of 2000 years, look into it with some respect, please.
Please take a look at Romans, I believe it's the 13th chapter. You're looking at it the wrong way; the Church is simply and purely the fulfillment of that to which "the old Hebraic religion" pointed. There's no "divorce," there's a coming to fruition.
He said flatly that he did not come to abolish the law and the prophets. "Did not come to abolish" sounds pretty clear to me.
Yeshua freed us from the Law.
Christians are the grafted in branch. Yeshua came for the children of Israel first, the Chosen Ones. When the Jews rejected Yeshua He then turned to the non-Jews who accepted Him. If people think they’re still under the Law, well I feel sorry for them. The Law is not the Nine Commandments only (The first line is a statement followed by nine commandments) - but there are over six hundred laws. You tell me that Christians have to follow all of them to be right in the sight of G-d? After all, the Law is the Law.
I see what they wear during some high Mass or something. And it’s not just the Catholic church but other denominations. Normally you are right, they wear a cassock of some sort. And the reason I asked questions here I thought that maybe perhaps I could get some answers without all the nasty replies. Guess I was wrong. Salvation however provided me with links that can. Thanks anyway and enjoy life.
Insult? How is asking where the finery came from? How was it developed over time? You’re the one making the assumption that I’m calling those robes ridiculous. I NEVER said that. I simply asked a rhetorical question how did those robes or vestments develop into what they are today. You and others are the one’s who jumped to conclusions for my question. I know better in the future not to ask for a bit of information or knowledge seeing that it’s more important to insult than to answer.
