doctrinal innovations were far more prevalent in the east. The doctrinal innovation of the Filiogue originated in Toledo, which was about as far to the west as one could be in the ninth century.
Let's be honest: doctrine was a tool used by power hungry monarchs (like Charlemagne) who used the Papacy for their own geopolitical purposes.
