Previous winners of the animal welfare charity's award include Morrissey, Tony Benn and Ricky Gervais
Pope Francis has been named Person of the Year by UK-based animal welfare charity PETA.
According to PETA, Pope Francis was chosen for asking the world's 1.2 billion Catholics and other citizens of the world to respect the environment and treat animals with kindness.
In his encyclical, Laudato Si', which was released earlier this year, Pope Francis wrote: "Every act of cruelty towards any creature is 'contrary to human dignity'......We are not God. We must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in God's image and given dominion over the Earth justifies absolute domination over other creatures".

How appropriate.
The phony pontiff is a real dog!
Instead of money for Peter’s Pence, toss the cur a bone!
Mel Gibson for Pope! Warts and all.
I’m not a particular fan of the pope for his Liberation Theology leanings, but it is hard to really criticize opposition to animal cruelty. He acknowledged “dominion” and isn’t, as far as I know, against meat or other human uses thereof.
But a lot of the world does still need to learn the basics against animal cruelty.
He’s a lunatic. Of course we have absolute domination over animals. That is what dominion means!!!
We also have a command from God to be good stewards. If the pope had addressed the issue from that tack he’d have made much more sense.
It seems that everything this guy says just disappoints me more and more. The cardinals made a mistake with this one.
PETA isn’t against animal cruelty the way normal people define it. They don’t mind if domestic animals die or go extinct and they hate people.
“a rat is a pig is a boy”.....”Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughter houses.”, Ingrid Newkirk, PETA
Yeah, but the pope didn’t say anything about PETA. All he said was to not be cruel to animals and to be mindful of the environment.
He’s not responsible for what group deems to name him for some award.
I think others see it that way as well. The idea that animal cruelty has a one to one relationship with human cruelty is a standard talking point for animal rights groups. This isn't true but nobody confronts them on it. With how destructive these groups are, I don't like seeing them get verbal ammo from a source that should be pushing against them.
Just because PETA people tend to be wacko extremists doesn’t mean speaking out against animal cruelty isn’t a worthy thing to do.
Who cares how PETA sees it?
How does someone who never watches TV, know anything about PETA?
Might as well bring back sinkspur.
An award from PETA should be a wakeup call.
Huh?
I haven’t lived with a TV for decades, and I know more than enough about PETA.
But again, the pope wasn’t giving PETA an award, it was the other way around.
