‘I believe in the Bible’: Trump courts Christian right

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump recently showed up at a gathering of Iowa conservative Christian voters with a copy of the Bible in hand.

“See, I’m better than you thought,” he said. Then came a black-and-white photograph from his confirmation to further prove his Christian cred.

“Nobody believes this,” he said to laughs. “What went wrong?”

As the Republican presidential front-runner and billionaire businessman tries to maintain his lead in early polls with rivals gaining, Trump is increasingly courting a wing of the Republican Party that might seem antithetical to his brand: evangelical Christians.

After initially declining the invitation, Trump spoke Friday in front of several hundred social conservative leaders at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit in Washington. He joined a speaking program that includes Republican rivals with long records of dedication to religious causes — among them, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who wants his colleagues to risk a government shutdown to block funding to Planned Parenthood.

Trump brought his Bible along once again, and briefly addressed his faith between attacks on his rivals and Democrats.

“I believe in God. I believe in the Bible. I’m a Christian,” he said. He ended by bemoaning the increased use of the term “Happy Holidays” in place of “Merry Christmas” as a sign that Christianity is under attack. As president, he said, he’d reverse the trend.

In Oklahoma City later in the day, Trump had kind words for Pope Francis as the Catholic leader visited Trump’s hometown of New York. “He is a unifier. He wants to bring people together, and I think that’s a great thing,” Trump said. “That’s what we have to do. We have to bring people together.” He did mention that he disagrees with Francis on global warming.

Hey, I’m the stupid one, remember? I have no judgments of my own, here. You own all of that condemnation stuff against participating in the faith. It was you who came out blowing your mouth off about Trump as a giver, therefore he was faithful, because he didn’t go to church. I mean, LOL!!

Take your screwy minimalist version of “faith” up with God, not me. Get a load of the Ten Commandments, and all those clear traditions that God Himself commanded of his people.

It’s all available. If you read, you would find it in BOTH testaments, and confirmed obviously in church history.

Or you can stick with your pseudo-Christianity-faith of convenience, comfort and cookies.

Absolutely correct. Let me assure you, you are correct. In my own limited understanding of great things and the will of God in the doings of mankind, I have considered that the Church is certainly in the Garden agonizing with our Lord, with the Apostles asleep. Even possibly, infringer, beyond the Garden and before Pilate. Following the Mysteries has value. It is insightful, if we can agree that the Church shall surely follow the path of suffering, all the way to the Cross.

Today, our shepherds are asleep. And, apparently some are wolves among the sheep. I heard once that the sheep represent the shepherds of the Church, and that the lambs represent the people of God. We are quite warned by Jesus when he wondered aloud, whether upon his return, would he find any faithful left. He said that there are those who would lead “many” to perdition, that we must endure to the end.

Enduring and “receiving” are part of that suffering, as both are surrounded by enemies. I endure much that I am repelled by, even on Sunday, in order to be “fed” and to “receive” sustenance for the journey. You know what I am saying, I think? A little code work, here. :) Thx, Rita

Actually through his son Trump has given many millions to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospitals. He doesn’t talk about it, and it takes some digging to find it (because it is run through his son), but he has.

Thanks. Great to know. Trump is a generous person, but because he doesn’t seek fame for it some of these pop culture eGOP types ding him for it.

I read the whole article this thread links to and found he gave $100k to Billy Graham in 2012 and several others.

He’s having a meeting tomorrow with several pastors to talk about issues they face.

Read the whole article, it’s worthwhile.

I’m not a Trump girl, but I’m watching everyone, trying to get a sense of their character.

I pray for them all.

The TDS people will now run away from this thread, but if any still lurk, how many of you have given $28M to help sick kids (and this is just one project): http://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/money-and-power/news/a2838/eric-trump-cuts-the-ribbon-on-his-landmark-surgical-and-icu-center-at-st-jude/

St Jude is a Godsend to anyone in need of such medical services. Trump being involved without fanfare is charity, true Christian style charity.

I think more of lemmings than sheep when I see the people fawning over this Pope. As I recall lemmings were also guided by a Catholic.

Er, I was thinking the same thing about you. Very anti-Jesus in attitudes and words. A Pharisee, I think I how Jesus would describe you.

Yes, the word of God is so very anti-Jesus, isn’t it!

When you roll your own anyway.

No, you’re not even close to the Zkingdom of Heaven, Pharisee. Plank, eye. Now, as Jesus did with those who would not receive Him, I shake the dust (you) off my shoes and have no more communication with you.

.
Those who would not receive him are those such as yourself that ignore his distinct words, preferring easy-believeism.

The Pharisees offered the words and ideas, and commandments of men, as do you, rejecting the commandments of Yehova, and maintaining a rigid system to keep men in darkness.

The dust was not on your shoes, it was much higher up.
