‘I believe in the Bible’: Trump courts Christian right
http://www.washingtonpost.com ^ | September 25, 2015 | Jim Colvin

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump recently showed up at a gathering of Iowa conservative Christian voters with a copy of the Bible in hand.

“See, I’m better than you thought,” he said. Then came a black-and-white photograph from his confirmation to further prove his Christian cred.

“Nobody believes this,” he said to laughs. “What went wrong?”

As the Republican presidential front-runner and billionaire businessman tries to maintain his lead in early polls with rivals gaining, Trump is increasingly courting a wing of the Republican Party that might seem antithetical to his brand: evangelical Christians.

After initially declining the invitation, Trump spoke Friday in front of several hundred social conservative leaders at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit in Washington. He joined a speaking program that includes Republican rivals with long records of dedication to religious causes — among them, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who wants his colleagues to risk a government shutdown to block funding to Planned Parenthood.

Trump brought his Bible along once again, and briefly addressed his faith between attacks on his rivals and Democrats.

“I believe in God. I believe in the Bible. I’m a Christian,” he said. He ended by bemoaning the increased use of the term “Happy Holidays” in place of “Merry Christmas” as a sign that Christianity is under attack. As president, he said, he’d reverse the trend.

In Oklahoma City later in the day, Trump had kind words for Pope Francis as the Catholic leader visited Trump’s hometown of New York. “He is a unifier. He wants to bring people together, and I think that’s a great thing,” Trump said. “That’s what we have to do. We have to bring people together.” He did mention that he disagrees with Francis on global warming.

I read what the pastor said, and Trump’s request of the pastor seemed hollow to me, in view of his public actions and statements. We had one in our church when I was a teenager, that sweet-talked the pastor much like that, and went on to swindle quite a number of members.

I was responding more to your comments. The only thing that will engage us to the power of God is living by his word.

Trump has already made it plain that he doesn’t think he needs the word of God.

No, he hasn't, just as you make it clear you love to judge. I again repeat, if it were up to you, based on Bible history, you would not have accepted Moses, David, Jonah, Peter, etc.

Men will ALWAYS miss the "next" man of God because the next man of God is almost never what they "think" God should be giving them.

Perhaps he hasn’t made it clear to you, because you simply don’t wish to see it, but he definitely did.

The word of God has already told us who he would be sending, so that those that are watching wouldn’t miss them.

God’s elect didn’t fail to recognize Moses, David, Jonah, Peter, etc. Try a quick read of Hebrews 3 and 4. Belief is the key, and without it there is no knowledge of him, nor of his servants.

After scanning this thread and several other threads, I feel like throwing up. I see things in Trump that I admire and I will vote for him if he is the nominee, but he is not the Messiah. Many folks here are getting carried away.

Um hum. The point is---and you know this is the point---the men God chose were NEVER what you predict, and are almost never "holy." They are willing.

And we ain't talking second coming here, so please don't start that.

Never “holy?”

Every man God has given us has been set apart from the herd (that is what holy means).

Your injection of “second coming” tells me that you’re possibly not a student of the word. Paul gave us a list of events in 2Thessalonians that must come first, even before the resurrection, let alone the Parousia.

Trump’s defining statement:

Bonhoeffer was a great prince of The Faith. So were many others, like Georg Muller and Martin Niemoeller, and I guess you would have to include Karl Barth as standing against Nazism.

I don’t see anyone portraying Trump as a messiah, but I do know that many of us have been praying for years God would turn this nation back to Him, and that takes a leader... a man to lead us there. Is that what Trump is? I don’t know, but I don’t see any of these others with the mettle to do it. The things revealed about Donald Trump in this thread give me hope that ‘such a time and such man as this’ is here ... we shall see.

Trump by his own words “doesnt bring God Into it”......so Im somewhat doubtfull that God would choose Donnie for much of anything except possibly some serious COMEUPANCE!!

Trump isn’t a church going hypocrite, either. He has proven time and time again his charity and humanity. When he has had the chance to do good for others using his wealth, he has done so. He doesn’t just give money, but his time and himself. There are many stories around of him doing that, and I find acts of humanitarian charity to be as Christian as anything I see people do.

“He has a fine background, but success got in the way and between him and his faith. “

No, it didn’t. He has a long history of charity and humanitarian givings. It is very Unchristian of you to say otherwise and denounce his faith.
