Donald Trump recently showed up at a gathering of Iowa conservative Christian voters with a copy of the Bible in hand.
"See, I'm better than you thought," he said. Then came a black-and-white photograph from his confirmation to further prove his Christian cred.
"Nobody believes this," he said to laughs. "What went wrong?"
As the Republican presidential front-runner and billionaire businessman tries to maintain his lead in early polls with rivals gaining, Trump is increasingly courting a wing of the Republican Party that might seem antithetical to his brand: evangelical Christians....

‘I believe in the Bible’...
That’s odd. I always thought polygamy was a Mormon or Muslim thing.
How is Don Trump a polygamist? Because he divorced? So have I and probably the majority of the people here.
Pander, pander, pander.
But the Trumpaholics will drink it up...
So Ronald Reagan was a polygamist? Who knew?
“So have I and probably the majority of the people here.”

Me too !

Politicians routinely claim to be Christians. These are the guys standing by while babies are beheaded and their little heads boxed up for sale. They are also standing by while Christians are being slaughtered in the middle east. They have acquiesced to the phony deal protecting Iran’s nuclear program.
So, I’m waiting to see who among our candidates sincerely gives a rip.
That's nice. But do you believe the Bible?
I would like to know what he means when he says he believes the Bible. Does he mean that it is the inspired infallible word of God and the rule for life and faith? Or does he mean he likes some to the ideas and other not so much? Does he mean that he understands that he is a sinner and his only hope of reconciliation with God is to unreservedly embrace Jesus as his Lord, trusting in Jesus’ death as an atonement for his,(Donald’s), guilt and His resurrection as a first fruit of the resurrection unto life. Does Trump mean that he finds the ethical standard of God’s law to be the most holy wise manner to govern society? Does he mean it is cool to have one on his shelf? It could mean so many things, I would like to know what he means.
Donald Trump said “I will stand up for Christians” he also said “I am a Presbyterian, I am one of you.”
That is more than any other politician running has ever said, and that is good enough for me.
Are you asking those same questions of Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio (once a Mormon), John Ellis Bush or any other candidate?
Seriously? Ted Cruz has talked about religion and Christianity hundreds of times.
I know! I know! It means, "I'm running for the GOP nomination and will need a significant portion of the Evangelical vote, so maybe if I wave this Bible around for a bit, they'll think I'm one of them."
Like many mainstream Protestants, he doesn’t go into detail about what he believes. First of all, he says he believes in God and the Bible. I’m not electing a pastor of a church - if I was then I’d want to know all these Biblical positions. Other than the current president, and possibly BJ Clinton - most presidents have readily admitted that they had no where to turn except God and prayer once the pressures of the office overwhelmed them. I’m going to trust that he believes in God and the Bible - and I also noticed how much he cherishes the Bible given him by his mother. There is no religious litmus test to be a president - and that is spelled out in the Constitution.
My context was...Donald Trump said I will stand up for Christians he also said I am a Presbyterian, I am one of you.
This was blatant, politically incorrect pandering to a group, my group, that racism, terrorism, greed, clinging to guns and bibles, red necks, crackers, shall I go on, are being maligned and even persecuted and killed in this world. It is refreshing, and I loved it. I love Ted Cruz, and he is certainly drawing up battle lines and I would love to see him as president. But I am really liking the Alpha-Male Donald Trump. His seemingly outrageous statements are backed by thought and strategy.
I am a devout Evangelical and since his comments about taking ‘the lil wafers and wine’, I knew religion was not a very big part in his life. Many wealthy people are not, simply because they don’t feel they need anything from God.
But I still support Trump because I think he clearly understands the dangers America is in. I believe his love for America and Americans and his boldness and courage makes him the most likely candidate to turn things around.
Perhaps this journey he has undertaken will bring him closer to the Lord as he realizes this particular challenge is much bigger than he can conquer on his own. It was the non-believer Cyrus that the Lord used to allow Israel to go back to their homeland from captivity.
That sounds like you desire to be willfully ignorant of the ethical foundations for the man running for the office with the most influence over national ethics. They call it the bully pulpit for a reason.
There is no religious litmus test to be a president...
But where the Constitution does not have a religious test, I do as do many other voters, like the ones he is was speaking to. Trump said he believes in the Bible, I want to know what he means by that. I do not want to be duped by another fraudulant pretender.
No, I’m not willfully ignorant of the ethical foundations of a person running for office. Trump is who he is and is well aware of his own warts, while others play the Sunday School teacher. Some even use their faith to deceive the voters. I’ve seen this happen time and time again. As I said - we are NOT electing the pastor of a church. You choose your candidate, and I’ll choose mine - I’d prefer that Trump be a little more Christian oriented, but as it is - he has room for improvement and God can work miracles. Unlike those who pound their chests like the Pharisees.
