Pope Francis is not as popular a pontiff as he used to be in the United States especially among conservatives according to a new Gallup survey out Wednesday. A larger share of American Catholics say they dont have a favorable view of their churchs spiritual leader. A little more than seven in 10 (71 percent) have a favorable image of Francis, a drop of 18 percentage points from last year.

I’m shocked.
A close friend of mine stopped going to church b/c of the pontiff’s radical Marxism. He’s had enough of it.
I’m disturbed that it’s still that high...
That will certainly hurt his chances of reelection.
I miss John Paul.
If the sacraments required perfect people to be effective, they wouldn't exist. I agree with your friend in sentiment but removing yourself from the life of the Church because of the apparent failings of a cleric is spiritual suicide.
The Church has survived worse.
I miss Benedict... actually I miss Pius IX lol.
The thing is, the Pope does not serve at the pleasure of the laity, or for the most part, at the pleasure of the clergy either.
It is a major thing for a Pope to step down from the job while still living, and an even greater improbability that a Pope could be forced to abdicate. Even US Supreme Court justices have less job security, for they COULD be subject to impeachment, but no such procedures exist for a Pope.
Besides your insistence on lazy sloppy postings, you now want to take a mainstream news story and make it a Catholic Caucus?
Why? What is wrong with you?
I wouldn’t think you could be a spiritual leader and a political/environmental activist at the same time. The typical socialist doesn’t even believe there is a spiritual side to human nature.
But did not Benedict set the standard for future popes to be able to step down. Even Pope Francis said a couple of months back that his time as Pope will be a short one.
I agree with YOU, but my friend’s response is unsurprising.
Why do you make a BIG DEAL or a MOUNTAIN out of MOLE HILL ?
Just go to the posted site and read it, nothing wrong wtih that.
Same here.
Apparently 70% of my fellow Catholics are Communists.
If all Catholics in the world could vote to choose the Pope, I don’t necessarily think we would end up with a more conservative pontiff.
The presidency cannot be compared to the papacy. The presidency is ultimately elected in the Electoral College and that usually means (but not always) winning the popular vote among the broad mass of voters in the US. Further, a POTUS can be impeached and is subject to term limits-—things they don’t have at the Vatican. The office of the papacy is a lifetime appointment.
All we can do at this stage is pray that the current Pontiff will follow in his predecessor’s footsteps and retire early.
What’s his rating among people who consider themselves Christian?
As a Catholic myself, I can’t disagree with you...unfortunately.
Why? You have some interest in driving hits away from Free Republic?
You clearly have an agenda.
